    Default NBN Hardware

Moving to NBN inside 12 months and looking for my own hardware so its not provider locked.

Anyone recommend a high quality router with WAN input, 4 LAN outpus and 2 voip outputs to ATA's.

I am considering this cheap one -> as my cheap entry into NBN.

Currently I have ADSL throught a NetComm which has proven successful as an internet and phone interface.

I like the option of configuring the device myself and using my own voip providers so avoiding the units provided by the ISPs.

What you all using out there?

i use a fritz!box 7390 which has everything you asked for. I just set dad up on the NBN and he is using a Billion 7800VDOX. took me all of 2 mins to set his up and works a treat.

Thanks Crootie.... what ISP did your dad choose?

I like the Billion box as its Wireless N 600MBps,Gigabite ethernet and NAS capability

well he didn't choose. I did for him.. I chose iinet as I have been with them now for about 15 years and have never had a problem with them. Also he is a VET and not to good in the head anymore and if he has a problem that he can't sort out iinet's customer service are patient and understanding and will guide him through if I am not available.

as for box ability... the 7390 will do the same and probably a lot more (ie. gig eth, voip, nas online radio streaming + a bucket load more). not certain about N ability but I have seen devices connected higher than 300 before.

Glad I could give you a little bit of help and info.

PS... the wireless on my 7390 for distance out performs my dads 7800. but everyones is different.

I networked the whole house during building and consider wireless a bonus for the children's iDevices and tablets The Billion allows a guest SSID for their friends. I am reading up on the Fritz box (assume the DSL input is WAN) and like the phone/answering machine capabilities. Looked at iiNet but think the best plan out there may be Exetel for data and then keep MyNetFone VoIP account.

Still considering hardware that will take advantage of the higher speeds, my gigabit network, nas, voip, wifi, home alarm interface (via voip by the looks of things) and stability.

Anyone else with hardware running out of the NBNCo connection box into a wan port acting as a router with all the options? thanks to Crootie for giving us 2 options.

I've installed more than 50 of these on the NBN and they are a really good router. You get full 100Mbps throughput which is a trap many people fall into with routers.. I also use the fritz 7390 for home and it's also a good unit.

Just remember on both units that you wont have 4 LAN ports as you need to use one of them as WAN.

    Thank you Warbo.

I only need one LAN as I have it running through a 48 port patch panel. Would pay extra for the Fritz box (or Billion) due to the bucket load of features they have when compared to the TP-Link unit

I just realised I only read the first post, where you wanted a router with 4 LAN ports :-)

I have a similar set up as the one you are thinking about.

    Exetel 100/40Mbps for NBN
    MNF for Voip
    Fritzbox 7390

I use the Fritzfon as well as the Fritzfon android app on my mobile to make and receive VOIP calls.

The 1GB LAN ports are handy too.

All in all I don't think you'd have any complaints using the above.

That is the arrangement I am looking for by the sounds of things.

I mentioned 4 LAN as that is standard these days. I would use 1 LAN for my switch (48 port) and if needed another LAN for my Android XBMC Media Box as it works better off the switch. At present it runs wirelessly.

A warning when it comes to Billion 7800xxx routers. It looks like they are still using that horrible glue to hold things in place. If failing caps don't make the router unusable in a few years time the glue going off and corroding the hell out of everything will. But 200 bucks over three years ain't so bad.

Billion 7800xxx router here, 5 years never turned off in a small cupboard here, still going strong, no issues whatsoever...

Up to you but it might be worthwhile popping the top off and seeing if the glue has started to turn. If it has a bit of careful scratching it off will extend the life of the unit.

The current model 7800s have glue splashed around the WIFI area to hold the antenna wires on and it's hard to say why they did that as those little plugs have more than enough grab to stay in place without glue given that they only have a gram or less of wire connected to them. Wise design choices don't appear to be Billion's forte as they've routed the wires for one band through the power supply area.

Ended up buying a second hand Fritzbox. Now on NBN with TPG and it works flawlessly.

Fritzbox is an amazing piece of hardware and basic pabx..... sorry you telemarketers, you directed straight to the answering machine before the phone even rings.
