ok bit of a update here finally got a level 2 tech on the phone he changed the Rx freq and moved me from the broken hill beam to the Sydney beam and for the first time in nearly 6 months have not had a dropout for over 12 hours yes that right 12 hours he is going to ring again today to see how it is and also speed has increased as well not as much of a lag and ping down to 560ms might be the solution he did change the freq because i was looking in that section at the time he said and it did change

@Puca,

Glad you're having some success. I've still got regular dropouts, maybe slightly less than last week. The service is still close to unuseable and I'm hoping to see much more stability. I haven't been badgering the support people recently, so maybe I need to suggest what you've had done.

cheers

I still have dropouts despite claims that there were 'Skeduled Maintaintance' for 2 hours on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday AM's.
Didnt achieve much as I had one at 9.30am Fri morn and 3 that night between 7.25pm and 8.15pm.
I have just had another now at 1.45pm Sat, bloody hopeless.
When I said I may have the option of receiving Wireless here now and I was considering it , the Support operator made no effort to convince me to stay with them and was rather supportive of going to Wireless.
With the 'Month' drawing to a close, I am waiting patiently waiting to see what effect these disconnects will have on next months fee's.
I again complained about the total lack of information about this problem and I said I tend to believe had I not been persistant and quoted info from both this and the Whirlpool forum, I would just have been fobbed of as before when I was told it was the 2 Tropical Cyclones interferring with the ground Station at Cairns.
Nobody has ground stations in the Tropics and certainly not at Cairnes.
Just think if this does go pear shape, as I think Ipstar is the major supplier of the Govt Broadband Scheme.
Not a lot of very happy users Jane.....................

This thread is so frustrating. Why are you guys sticking with Sat?

Gordon, here's an offer for you.

1: I send you an Option Globesurfer III HSPDA 3G+ wireless router containing my own simcard (no need for you to even activate one).

2: Or I send you a 3G usb modem with my own simcard.

3: You can have either one for 1 week and send it back.

All I ask is for payment of hardware as security which I will refund upon return.

Globesurfer is $325 inc post and usb modem is $95 inc post.

I promise, you will find general web browsing much faster and Nil dropouts. Signal is not affected by weather or anything like that.

If you take me up on the offer I urge you to go for Option 1. Once you get one of these, you won't look back!

You're not half as frustrated as I am!!!

I have no mobile phone coverage whatsoever, let alone 3G. I used to be able to climb to the top of a windmill about 20km from the homestead and achieve a CDMA connection. However, Telstra have now withdrawn this superior service in favour of the 3G short distance system.

Our phones are provided over microwave links (Digital Radio Concentrator System) and our fax machine doesn't achieve more than 7200bps reliably. So if I use dial-up, the result is similar.

Hence I am stuck with vSat... Bordernet (via Optus) was relaible but I wanted more speed. I went to AussieBB (via IpStar) and got improved speed with reliable dropouts. The new NBN is unlikely to improve things for people outside of Labour heartland.

Yes it is frustrating, maybe I should forget all this and get back to work.

cheers

Warbo, I appreciate your very generous offer but basically, financialy it is not an option I can consider at this time.
Whille I believe your correct and I can obtain Wireless Internet here in the Village, I would still have to confirm it would work in my house as reception can vary markedly house to house.
I need to know too if I can connect 2 or more computers to the system as I have presently and lastly of course is what PLANS are available and the cost.
I think I did tell you I went to the Optus Shop in Bathurst a few months ago to inquire and the saleman once he couldnt find me on his maps flatly refused to sell me any modem and walked away.

Under no circumstance would I ask for a 'Trial on Appro' as I know my present financial situation would not allow me to furfill the obligation so on that note, I again thank you but not just at the moment.

I must say in fairness untill this problem occured I have had good service from Ipstar and this last week I believe I have only experienced 3 disconnects.

AJM, you must live 10 kms further away from the 'Technological Highway' than I do.
And I just love your comment about getting 'Improved Speed with Reliable Dropouts'
That says it all !!!!

No probs Gordon. Please don't think I'm trying to drum up business. It's not the case at all. Good luck with everything.

AJM if you want, pm me your location and I can look if there is any chance at all a strong antenna could get you some 3G.

On Friday I did an installation at a guys house in the middle of nowhere and he got 99% signal from a tower 41kms away line of sight without an antenna! Admittedly he lived on top of a hill in a mansion overlooking a vast valley, but that was some kind of record either way.

I have just received my Internet account for March from my ISP and because I complained about the numerous disconnections during February , I have been credited with the money I paid last month for this month so I have this month 'FREE'.

It does pay to bitch and whinge at times.

ohhh, just remembered, February had 28 days and March has 31 so thats even better, eh??

AJM, I must say that the frequency of 'Disconnects' has diminished markedly.
Before I guess I was having at least 3 every day in my using time, God knows how many when the computer was turned off but it must have been a few for them (ISP) to give us this Credit.
In the last 9 days, I went 3 or 4 days without a 'Disconnect' that I am aware of so I would say its down to about 5 in 9 days although it spat the dummy twice late last night, (Monday) after 10.30 pm.
I must be fair and again say untill the end of 2009, I had at best, one 'disconnect' a Month since March 2008.
From memory it died big time on New Years Day and i am wondering now if that was part of this problem we have been experiencing.
Not to worry,I whinge, they Credit, happy all Round !!!

Actually, the direct replacement for Telstra CDMA is their NextG service, which is vastly superior to their 3G service.

NextG has the greatest regional coverage of any network in Australia.

I have no affiliation with Telstra, but they have the best regional/remote coverage ... they know it and they charge a fortune for it too!

Mtv, what's the difference between their NextG network and their 3G network?

As far as I know Telstra had the CDMA network which was directly replaced with their NextG network which is actually just their spin on 3G.

I'm still having IPStar drop outs. However, I received a 'phone call from AussieBroadband on Friday advising that IPStar believe it is associated with their gateway (ie not satellite link nor AussieBroadband equipment, but rather the computer network equipment at their satellite to internet gateway ... Kalgoorlie in my case). To prove this theory, I am being moved to a temporary gateway (three days) which has a clean setup and hopefully doesn't exhibit the dropouts.

As of today (Saturday) 0710 hrs Central Standard Time, we have just had a drop out (logged off and took 4 mins to log back on). I'll let you know whether to laugh or cry as things progress this week end.

regards

Aussiebroadband rang me Friday afternoon (19th) and although there has been no mention of Beam relocation, I was told they were still actively monitoring my service and they had done something (didnt say what) but hoped this would be effective and would be reavaluated over the weekend.
Whatever they did, at 9.20pm it did the usual disconnect but I feel it did a 'Doubler', ie it tried to re establish contact, failed, waited for a preset time then retried and finaly reconnected with an OffLine time of of about 10 minutes, one of the longest encounted so far.
The operator was very inquisitive about the 'Off Time' and asked several times if most were of 5 minutes average, not 10 minutes which has me wondering if '5' is acceptable and within 'Performance' but '10' may incurr a penalty ??
I am sure it was New Years Day when the system crashed and it was offline for several hours, the story on the Voice Over was the Kalgoolie Gateway went down so I believe these 'Disconnections have actually been occuring intermitently since October last year but since January have become far more often.
There was NO suggestion from ABB that ANY equipment at my end was at fault but I did wonder about the LNB around mid morning in Mid Summer as the SUN shone directly on the flat top of the LNB casing.
Now the UV rate is way down and the Sun's angle is much more oblique plus the ambient air temperature is dropping as we approach winter so overheating of the LNB is very unlikely to occur.
If that is a problem, then it needs a cover not unlike a C Band top but open both ends to allow a free air flow.
Not rocket science to shade the casing.
The last email I have from ABB is that Ipstar advised it would need 3 months to fix this problem so I replied if I took my car to a mechanic because it wont start and he said it would take 3 months to get it started, I would be looking for another mechanic.
Also it was 'thought' that this is some kind of a 'Hang Up' where the computer eithers gets a conflicting command or a date loss so it then just 'freezes' untill whatever re boots it perhaps, it was all very Airy Fairy.
Now of course we are also hearing that either the home/gateway/programing/Thia Green Curry Chiken Satay noodles are not suitable for Australian conditions.

I am not sure if thats the box, the content, the printing or the plucking of the Duck but there you have it all !!!

The same web page has a message window labelled 'Login Status Messages:' which shows you "Logged Off" , "Login Succeeded" plus a heap of other related messages. The number of drop outs is not recorded, but I leave this web page up 24/7 and then count the number of "Logged Off" messages in this scrollable window. (Would be nicer if it logged this data for us)

Your signal strength looks typical and the signal to noise ratio (EsNO) is probably workable. My EsNO is 9.7dB at the moment but does drop down to below 8 during rain etc. You need a good margin of signal over noise to maintain the connection and support higher download speeds I assume.

My Link quality is also "poor" but I've been told it is okay!

Since the drop out at 0710 hrs Saturday, there have been no further drop outs on my connection up til 0930 hrs Sunday (as I post).

I'm hoping that the Saturday morning drop out was just the reconnection to the new temporary gateway and that I'm fixed... time will tell.

Normally, I don't mind a bit of green curry chicken!
