Default Out on a limb....

Does anybody have or know somebody that could obtain a leakdown compression tester?

I would like..

1. to use it for my Triumph

2. if possible make one using the other as a template.
(i wont pull it apart just look at what gauges regulator etc etc)

I could buy on off evil bay but they all come from USA.

Assuming it is a Stag, the original engines are a piece of art and a shrine to F1 racing technologies of the 60's.

Many modern fixes to bring them in line with the times like German timing gear and chain sets, spin on oil filter adapters to get rid of the old bucket with insert filters and so on.

The engines were small displacement V8's with small dia journals, alloy heads held down with studs, overhead camshafts with solid bucket cam followers and twin SU carb jobs.

They had a lot of potential, very easy to mod into a high revving animal.

I wouldn't change one for the world...besides it would take away from the cars character.

Yes you have to learn and understand "the beast" before working on them.

Its why many people give up and just go Chev, its the easy way out.

Its a shame when people do that, their engines are a work of art.

no, completely different engine...

the rover 3.5 and leyland(P76) 4.4 were based on the all alloy buick fireball 215CI V8 which came out in 1961.

Interestingly this same 1961 engine was developed into the v6 used in the commodore....

Here is a cutout drawing.

We use to get all our new parts through Rimmer Brothers in England, virtually everything you need is available through them, many parts that are no longer factory made are aftermarket built by them.

Here is the engine parts list page with exploded diagrams.
Click on any part number for a price.

There was a time about 4 years ago when i was thinking about rebuilding Stag engines at home for a money earning hobby.

Well built engines are worth $5000+ and high in demand, i had a bloke who had worn engines who would have sold them to me for under $300 each back then.

But as usual, there's never enough hours in the day to do everything.

Rimmers have a German set of chains with sprockets.

It was one of the problems with them, people would drive the cars without replacing them, they would wear being so thin compared to modern designs, but as usual the Germans built a high quality set.

If you click on Rimmers catalog above there is a timing chain section with L/RH sets marked standard or German.

Standard are 114 pounds vs 143 for the German ones.

Not many stags with original 3 ltr engines in them any more, apart from the long timing chain that used to stretch to buggery they had a problem with overheating. these engines are basically 2 4cyl engines cast onto a common block. Most have 3.5's or P76 /terrier truck 4.4's fitted to them although i have seen them with sbc's or ford windsors shoehorned in. Some parts from the VN series 1 V6 (Buick evenfire V6) and the rover/leyland v8 are interchangeable, a commo timing cover will fit and then you can run a distributorless ignition system (coilpacks) .

This is an even fire Buick V6 1979 model.

This is a P76 4.4 with a modded buick V6 HEI dizzy .
