| Junior Member | Hi all, I have encountered a weird problem and was hoping you could help. I have had no problems in the past burning AVI files to CDR and DVDR and watching them on the DVD players in our house. The other day a friend of mine gave me three AVI files which I copied to my desktop. I openned them on my PC and they each worked without a problem. However, when I burn these files to a DVDR or CDR, they will not play on either of my DVD players. Why would that be? I have since burned other AVIs to DVDR and these have played. But these three do not, regardless of what I do. I have even put them on to a DVDR with other AVI files - the other files work but these still don't! The files do appear on the DVD player menu, but when I try and select it I get the message that 'this file type is not supported'. However, it is just an AVI!!! Any advice would be appreciated. |

Rep Power: 6 ![]() | AVI is just a container for many types of encoding so it's not 100% all will work with your dvd player. If your dvd player don't have the correct codec it will not know how to play it. You could try to re-encode the files ? Last edited by Supermega; 26-01-10 at 08:55 PM. |

| Member | Sorry for the late reply, just seen this post. I'm assuming that you play AVI files directly onto an external stand alone DVD player. As Supermega is saying, your DVD player (IE: Firmware), may not recognise the codec. I use Gspot to see what Audio and Video codecs are used. Not many DVD players can play AVI files. Even the expensive ones. So you are in a relatively small market that wants to put 'lots' of hours of DVD quality onto a single DVD. The price you pay - now - is that they don't support a lot of codecs. Try using a converting program, that will convert from AVI to MOV or something else and then convert it back to AVI - that you know the codec works ok on your DVD player. The bad news is that the codecs are changing all the time - Divx is now on 7. All ok for the PC's, but not good for dedicated hard coded DVD players that only have a set amount of codecs on board. |

I have a stand alone NEC DVD burner that cost over $200 when I bought it, wont play AVI's but the $35 5 channel Sam's Warehouse/Go-Lo 'No-Name' one plays just about anything thats round and has Data on it. Its a pain but sometimes the only option is to do the conversion from ATI to DVD which makes it hopefully playable on everthing else. |
