Default Problems with gold after strong 3v mod?

    G'day everyone,

During the white card wanking fad a few weeks ago I modified my Strong 4658X using the method listed here.

This worked great for keeping Mr white cool under collar.

Now that V3 has died I have dug out my old trusty Aurora Goldie.

It just gave "invalid card" message so I figured it might not work at 3v.
I heard that some had incorporated a switch into the ground wire when doing the mod. "In theory I was led to believe that when then pin from the IC was ungrounded, that the card slot would run at 5v" So I simply installed a on/off switch in the ground wire"

Once the strong was reassembled and plugged in, I stuck in the goldie.
Still "invalid card" I then realised that the switch was in the on/3v position so I flicked it over to off/5v. I tried turning off mains power and rebooting but still "invalid card"

I then thought that I might have killed the card by switching voltage while card inserted, so I knocked up a new Goldie on a brand new wafer in Ghost Gold.

My 4658X accepted the new card right away and even worked in 3v or 5v mode.

This however only lasted for a few hours and I now get "invalid card" in 3v or 5v.

I put both gold cards into my phoenix and they both seem fine, all the details are there and ATR is correct.

I then tried the goldies in another (unmodified) strong box and they work fine.

I cant figure this out. The modified box still accepts Whiteys or Subs in both voltages but will not accept the goldies. It worked with goldies before the mod.

Anyone else had similar problems or enough knowledge to know what might be happening?

    Cheers!

I agree with mickc. Try using a silver, I`ve got the 3v mod done and 121 firmware and my silver is running fine.

    Thanks mickc.

I forgot about all the firmware swapping I did during the wanking fad. It might have something to do with it.

Not sure about silver? There was a thread on here recently about silvers dropping out every time keys rolled and people going back to gold.

Emerald may be my last hope if firmware doesn't work.

I will post my results when I give these methods a try so others may benefit from my tribulations.

    Cheers!

you need to use a 3 pole switch with one 'on' to ground for 3v and one 'on' to the base of the pin you lifted for 5v.

unplug power to box for switching.

goldies, silvers etc like 5v and may not work properly at 3v.

    Sorry to edit post.

You guys must have posted while I was typing.
Min- Good to hear that your silver works fine. I might give it a try.
Hoe- Thanks for that info. I had a suspicion that was the case. Someone told me different.

As Hoe said. Gnd the pin for 3v and tie it to 5v for 5v at the card. Use a SPDT switch with the center pin going to the chip and on the pins either side, one to ground and the other to 5V.

    Thanks guys,

    It all makes sense now.

But I have to wonder then, what voltage the card runs at when the ic pin is not grounded (open circuit) My other cards run at this What ever it is.

Floating inputs usually give unpredictable results!! They should always be tied high or low.

Hi Immortal, got the same result with my 4658x after the mod but fortunately I have a SCM 2.21a purple cam and goldie is very happy there running 121 firmware.
Saved having to do the switch trick....now all I need is a working whitey
