Default *New* UltraPlus X-9200HD PVR twin plugin tuner writeup

Finally the new UltraPlus twin tuner receiver has arrived, the UltraPlus X-9200HD PVR. You might say it’s got an uncanny resemblance to the Mediastar HD8200S well you are right. Cosmetically they are different with the X-9200HD having its nice large 12 character VFD display on the left hand side of the front panel, power, volume up/down and channel up/down buttons in the middle, and the 2 card slots and 2 CAM slots along with a USB port hiding under a flap on the right hand side.

The card slots support a host of cards including Irdeto, NDS, Viaccess and more and they also support most Austar cards (not cards from MyStars) and currently only blue Foxtel cards.

The rear panel has a variety of connections for your TV including HDMI, Component and Composite as well as SCART. There are another 2 USB ports on the rear, which can be used for USB hard drives, memory sticks or even WiFi wireless USB network sticks! But there is also the standard RJ45 network connection. There is an eSATA connection for another hard disk storage option, RS-232 port to upload firmware in case there is a firmware upload corruption via the usual USB memory stick method, and connections for either satellite, terrestrial TV or Cable connections depending on what plugin tuners you have installed.

Removing the cover is easy, with the removal of 5 screws, revealing the new plugin tuners and the new 2.5” SATA hard drive connections and caddy where you can install an optional internal hard drive. These are quieter and generate less heat than their 3.5” cousins.
The X-9200HD has two plugin tuner slots and comes standard with 2 satellite DVB-S2 plugin tuner modules. You then have the option to ‘plug and play’ with the optional DVB-T TV or Cable tuner modules. You then can record up to 3 programs and watch 2 (one via PiP )

You have a variety of recording options:
    • Install a 2.5” SATA drive internally
    • USB drive either 2.5” or 3.5”
    • eSATA drive
    • Network PC share or NAS (Network Attached Storage) device

The remote is fully featured with programmable universal buttons to also control your TV and DVD player.

Now I know I am kind of repeating myself but that’s because the UltraPlus X-9200HD PVR comes from the same Fortis stable as the Mediastar HD8200S!
The user interface has the look and feel of the other receivers from the Fortis stable, the UltraPlus , Octagon and the Mediastar but you would never know it’s a Linux based receiver. For the novice or person that just wants a receiver to use that works, you need no knowledge of Linux to use this receiver but for the more experienced you have the option of delving deeper into the OS via ftp or telnet and loading additional plugins.
Then there are other great features like the fast blind scanning (I reckon the fastest on the market) for the feed hunters out there or just for people that like to be able to scan every channel easily that’s on a satellite.
The GUI has built on the success of the previous models. Here is a link to the UltraPlus 980HD writeup I did and it shows some GUI snap shots. The only thing I haven't shown is the picture in picture photo!!

It also has an Internet and YouTube plugins which work very well as well as the ability to play back xvid files such as .mkv and .avi files.
This leads me to the new FreeTV+ addon which is incorporated in the latest firmware. It has YouPorn, SVT and Earth-Touch streaming addons which contain nature documentaries in the latter, not to be confused with the former!!!, and other doco’s which may be in German on SVT. Earth Touch is mostly in HD you need good internet speed of approx. 300MBps!
The new FreeTV+ addon is now available in the latest 1.09.25 version firmware for both UltraPlus X- X-9200HD and 900HD models and Mediastar HD8200S receivers.
There are so many more features I haven't mentioned like the preview window when browsing your recordings or EPG, Open 7 Day EPG, padding your timer recordings so the start a little earlier and end later automatically (like when the commercial TV stations don't start programs on time!), add skipping and fast forward.

    A manual can be found

I'm going to have an introductory promotion. They will be $469 but I will include the DVB-T TV tuner card as well.

Just received this new unit from LP in twin DVB-S2 form, today!

I use Tuner 1 for Ku band on a T90 and a EMP-Centauri P168 8-way switch that uses Positioner 1.2 signals to choose between each LNB (satellite) vis; D2, C1, D1, IS8, GE23, i701. This box sets this configuration up just fine including each LNB parameter individually! (It has USALS and other similar switching possibilities). For my use, I keep the loaded channels (Tuners) separated at the end of each scan, rather than choosing 'Copy-T1 to T2 etc).

Added an old D-Link WLAN USB adapter at one of the two rear USB spots - works just fine, STB menu for this item is terrific. (I'll add either Cat 6 ethernet or Wireless N adapter to replace the D-Link in time).

Streams the Earth Touch documentaries via the Net no prob with my slowish ADSL2+! (Loaded up 72 or so straight up to choose from) I can see this being popular with some folk, this feature makes the box worthwhile, especially for families. You can view it live (stream) if your net connection is great, or you can download each offering.

Added a new Western Digital 500gig Hdd WD5000BPVT (Blue). Unit shows up as unmounted (well, duh) and offers NTFS, FAT32 and Journaled as format options.

On i701Ku I edited the existing frequencies, easy to do. Moving channels around is easy, as is renaming etc.

Tuner 2 for me is C band, and this i'll do in a day or so. Like my experience with the Tuner 1's Ku Positioner 1.2 command install, I'd expect NP here. For C Band (motorised) I use a Positioner, and the Positioner commands will drive that just fine without conflict.

One of these in DVB-T2 and DVB-S2 would be ideal, record either Sat TV or Terrestrial, OR Net TV! Usable, bloody works.

    Default Octagon Equivilent

    Hi Guys,.

Have got me a Ultraplus X 9200, have had it for a few weeks now, and have been having quite a good play around with it.

One Question i wouldnt mind knowing, is what is the Octagon equivilent to the Ultraplus 9200.
Can we can use Octagon firmware releases for the 9200 ?.

    Cheers:

It's the Octagon 1028. There isn't any advantage in loading the octagon firmware as it will be the same. Obviously the vendor id would need to be changed on the receiver to load it but it's not worth the trouble.

    cheers,

    Hey,

Sorry, but I am new to investigating this sort of stuff.

I am a technical person but there are so many diverse areas of technology to keep up wih.

I am looking for something like this but will only have terrestrial to start with.

Is it possible to get one of these with 2 DVB-T2 tuners to start with and later change them to DVB-S2 tuners when I get a sat dish?

Would I get the same functionality but with HD Terrestrial TV?

or is there another product I could start with?

Thanks in Advance for all your help.

Hi, I haven't tried 2 terrestrial DVB-T cards. I don't see why you couldn't and it should work fine but I would prefer to test it for you first. I've ran out of the tuners and more are due any day now so I'll post back here and let you know how i go. Cheers, Leroy

Ok! I look forward to hearing how it goes.

Do you know if this device will upscale all video to 1080p?

Yes they upscale to 1080p. I set the output to 1080p on what I use so everything is upscaled.

Do you think the Mediastar is more suited to my requirements? Are they exactly the same, except for the standard tuner configuration?

    Default Vendor Id

    Hi Leroy.

    Thanks for your previous reply.
With regard to the Vendor Id, could you tell me what is involved in altering this.
I take it is specifically designed to keep end users from loading on alternative images ?.
I see Octagon have just released a new E2 image.
I'm interested in loading on some alternative images to see what other options are available.
It would be nice to see it similar to the dream with an online server for installation of different skins, Applications etc.

So far i have the ultraplus communicating over LAN to dreambox CS with good results using MGcamd.

    Cheers

I changed the vendor ID using the AAF recovery tool ages ago when having a play. Have a look in the Icycrypt section on satpimps.com and there is E2 info there.

Start a new thread on this topic and report your findings and how you go etc.

The Mediastar is essentially the same receiver execpt for the tuner configuration and cosmetics. The Mediastar would be better suited as it already has one DVB-T card.
I just removed the sat tuner and installed a second DVB-T card and all working well. I'm recording an SBS channel and watching channel 10 with lady gaga jumping around!

i guess the next questions i have a related to having the same functionality as you get with the sat tuners.

With the one tuner, can you record 2 or record 1 and watch 1 from the same bouquet?

i just ask this because i am curiuos if i would be getting the same funtionality as other pvrs like topfield.

thanks again for all your assistance n time.

No probs. It's been something I was curios about as well. You can record 2 and watch 1 with 1 tuner but they have to be in the same bouquet.
