Default DM800 Genuine and Clone differences.

These are photos of the two boxes I currently am testing.

I thought you may wish to know how to tell a clone DM800 from a Genuine.

Especially as the differences are subtle.

The units both worked perfectly as delivered, just ftp some details, scan a sat and away she goes with perfect 108o pics...

First photo here shows the genuine on the left and the clone on the right.

Second photo shows what you get in each box...remember genuine on left clone on right

but both have absolutely one major problem which pissed me off as it is a nightmare to fix, the whole display, case etc has to be replaced because of a a pathetic hinge design for the flap covering the card slot.

it is a little plastic pin, (soft plastic)...about 0.1mm thick.

It breaks if you raise your voice at it...and it was the genuine unit that broke.

Overall they are both built the same... But one is much more expensive.

(In some respects the clone is better built)

    I wouldn't hesitate to buy the clone...but...

The Octagon is a much clearer picture.

also...this box takes an infuriating full two minutes to boot up.

Contrast that to say an Octagon at 10 seconds or a DM500s at 30 seconds.

Here is the hinge that I am complaining about....

The DM800s does not support a card reader on it's serial port, but shares any colour card from it's card slot.

I also understand that a USB smargo card reader works connected to the rear.

Overall I say HD is the way to go, and these boxes are the future.

    Price?

clone landed "one off" about $525
    Genuine about $820

I have posted a thread showing the complete disassembly into the seperate pcb's etc of the genuine unit, but that is in the premium area.
So...hit the donate button if you want to see that stuff.

    thanks for watching...

    Great info zed.
Not on my priority list at the moment but might get one one day.
At least now I know what to look for in telling these apart (not that it seems to matter)

Z, was wondering where you got the clone from. The ones ive seen are redboxes (i think it was called), and looked fairly tacky compared to the one you have which looks spot on. At $525 i'd be interested in getting one but with the current state of whiteys I might have to rethink.

    Red face

    Hi Z80
thanks for the run down if i had been a bit quicker i would have bought and octagon instead of the dm800 ,shit happens, anyhow yes you are so correct about the front panel pin where the card slot is, if you have big fingers oh dear! it wont be long before this hinge breaks.
Yes it does run the smargo card reader very well,in fact im using it all the time as always in fear that ill break the hinge again, it also has the same problem at boot up, that i could fly the aus and back and the dm800 may have booted up by then, also it maybe a fault with my unit, that if i power it down i have to wait sometime 20 seconds or so to power it up again. But with dm500 and 600 it is always straight away.
Oh yesssssss the main mips chip i find this very handy for cooking my breakfast on in the morning as it runs so hot that you cannot leave your finger on it, in the end i got so worried about the heat i have glued a heat sink to the chip and put a small fan inside the unit now i keep my beer on top as it now runs cool.
It has also been reported that due to heat the picture couild start to pixerlate runing in HD.
There were reports about this heat problem and one dm800 owner tested other units and they all have the same heat problem.
Z80 does yours have a heat zink on the main chip?
The image that i run at the moment is the newnigma2.2.3 very stable, and of course thanks to all the teams that write these images always plenty of fun.
Would i get one of these again ,no way and yet wait! there is still the dm8000 to come this maybe a real beauty but hell i will have to morgage my house to buy one

z80, thanks for taking the time to upload the pics. Those chinese do a good job at copying stuff. I'm still interested in card temps as I've heard you could cook an egg on one if you pulled it out of the slot?

I was thinking of future proofing myself, so when aus* start broadcasting hd hopefully sometime in 2009, i would be in a position to recieve it. Who knows what will happen now with whiteys.
