Default DVD Recorder with removable HDD

I have a DVD Recorder with removable HDD and when I put it into my pc the bios can see it but windows xp can't. Disk manager wants some wizard to convert it. But I don't want to in case I lose data. Is this a linux thing? and will the DVD recorder be able to read a hdd formated to NTFS.

Sounds like it is either a Linux partition or another proprietary partition.

Goto Control panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Storage

Take a look at what the partition(s) on the drive are there.

If I remember correctly, most HD DVD recorders use a proprietary format to store data on the hard drive.
It's not recognisable under Windoze anyway.

I know this was posted 2 months ago but I am fiddling with a Lite-On HDD/DVD recorder because the burner decided to refuse to read discs.
In a UK forum called CDFreaks, I found a posting where one memer had hooked the HDD to the computer and it read 'LITEONFAT32'.
Now whether this means he could read the HDD contents and access it or not I dont know but this info may be of some use to you.
