when I did my aprentiship with PMG in mid sixties all boxes had bells abnd if you could get the number you could ring adding to that my aunty lived next to a public phone box infact infront of her kitchen window and as they didn't have a phone in the house I gave my mother the boxes number and when she wanted to talk to to her she would ring it some passerbys were quite supprised when they answered it and mum would ask them to nock on the aunts door if she haddent heared it.
