Default Samsung V5600 DVD/VCR combo

No power
Power lost after loading a cassette.
Have checked fuse - OK.
AC power is available both sides of fuse.
ON/OFF switch seems OK.
Any ideas?

No power at all? Or it powers up, but then shuts down when a cassette is loaded?

Have you measured the outputs at the power supply?

If you get absolutely nothing at any of the outputs the problem is probably on the primary side. The last one I had with this fault it was a failed switcher IC that also took out a couple of resistors.

If you get readings that are lower (but not zero) than they should be (usually printed on the board near the power connector) you probably have some bad caps in there. Any that are bulging/leaking are bad. They can be bad and still look okay, so if you don't have an ESR meter to test them it may be easier to replace them all.

If one or more supply rails read 0, but others are okay check the diodes/regulators for that rail. I have found the 3 terminal regulators dry jointed in these before. Shorted diodes are also fairly common.

Thanks for your reply.

sounds like it needs a main board, dont bother fixing it , 5 volts goes high and kills processors etc, just replace it these days.
now putting a new main board in them is a bit of a drama as there is a whole screenfull of option codes you have to set-up after installing it. i struggled with this a month back... but it does work after being set up ok.
costs a couple of hundred to change the main board with labour, about the same as the cost to replace the whole thing....

Well yavid,

can you read English text on a computer screen

If the answer is Yes go to the First Post, like top of page and read

If the answer is no then go to an English learning college near your Native home town.

Its most probably Diode D1SS16 short circuit, back right hand corner (looking from front)
Its a SF34 Diode, the recommendation is to put 2 in parallel.
They usually fail when using the VCR section.

droid is right it is the diode that fails and the reason it fails is the capstan motor

I had one of these units in yesterday to look at and that diode was shorted ,replaced it but as soon as the VCR was inserted it blew again so I recon you're right about the capstan motor.
