| Senior Member | That's just the basics the scrape through. Simple ohms law, series parrallel and resistors, capacitors, inductors, and maybe transformers. That's pretty much it. It's not like he's going to be using calculus for Nortons mesh analysis or caculating the resonant frequency or Q of a tank circuit ![]() Yep, we won't let him wire up anything, just tell him that if he sees combinations of Brown, Blue and maybe Green wires, he's about to die ! ---- Eletronics education is fun and easy. If cub scouts can do it and find it fun, anybody can. I like to describe the use of a relay and SPDT and DPDT switches. Anybody can understand how they work in seconds. With that knowledge I use it to describe how a transistor works using BC548 and BC558 to demonstrate the use of transistors as a switch. You can always spot a clever student because he is thinking of using them as an analog amplifier instead of a switch. There's occasionally one who'll calculate the hfe or plot the linear response on a graph. The not so bright ones end up with a pile of dead transistors. I have blown many transistors and still do ! |

| Thaumaturgist | General-purpose low-power transistors are cheap by the bag of 100 on eekbay - a few dollars, so blowing them up is not expensive as Trash will know. Hopefully, one learns something whilst watching that 'magic smoke' pour forth ! A bag of GP transistors and a bag of FETs can give many hours of amusement, look also at the mixed bags of Chinese resistors and capacitors by the 1000s (values 1 Ohm to 10Meg, 1p2 to 100nF etc.) - you can play until the sun goes down - or comes up ! |

I like to put the Normally Closed relay contacts in line with the relay power source. Then get them to hold on to the relay contacts..... After all it's safe it's only 12 volts...right? ![]()
