Very Common failure with all thermostats for hot plate elements.
Stokes part 553-14 (universal)
Everyone uses them :-)
has anybody experienced Invensis branded simmerstats getting stuck on ? this one is fitted to a westinghouse stove 2006 model . my daughter called to say that she couldnt switch off the large stove element , so i asked her to switch off the circuit breaker till i could get there. it was working fine when i arrived but i decided to replace it anyway.
local appliance place wanted $62 each , a quick ebay search bought me 4 for $48 , posted. now i have some spares . my Fisher and Paykel stove bought new in 2001 uses the same simmerstats.

thanks , i guess the contacts must have welded themselves together. i was going to dismantle it but forgot and chucked it.
I had the same problem with my Chef range over the years and have changed all four (the most used unit two times). After pulling a defective unit apart, I found that the thread holding the set screw that calibrates the bimetal thermostat fatigues and the unit fails "ON". It is an appalling design flaw and quite frightening when it happens. Luckily I was at home when it first occurred, as my wife went into panic mode and I killed the stove at the switchboard. I now know when they are about to fail as even the lowest heat setting produces almost full power. I would buy a new range, but cannot find any 700 mm free standing models at all (have been looking for three years now).

thanks , is that what happens ? i first thought the mechanism was slipping on the shaft . I wonder if the design is still the same , the part number is identical to the one that came out.
