    Default Panasonic VHS fault

    Hi all,
I've got a Panasonic NV-FJ600 video recorder that's playing up.

Symptom : Tape ejects immediately after insertion. The tape will go all the way in but ejects straight away.

Just wondering if anyone one else has seen this fault and done the repair ?

Check the worm gear and make sure it's not split on the motor shaft.

    Clean mode switch.

Fault could be due to broken teeth on the gear that is part of the take up assy. Called a VXL2670.

If the VXL2670 has failed, I've seen the main cam gear get damaged also.

    Thanks Mickstv.
The VXL2670 appears to have all its teeth so I'll look at the mode switch first then move on to check the other items.

Hi Loopyloo, from memory the mode switch gets tarnished so get some WD40 or similar and some cotton tip and give the tracks a good clean.

When you state "all the way", do you mean the tape fully loads around the head drum, or just that the front loading mechanism reaches its final position?
If the loading arm is not the cause, the main cam gear is most likely the culprit.
I never had any mode switch problems with the Z-Mech, maybe because it is mounted on the main PCB, or I was just lucky. The VXL2670 can sometimes look fine but still have a minor flaw.
I used to run a small screwdriver blade over each tooth to feel for any irregularities that might not be visible. is very helpful if you have not had much exposure to this deck.
BTW, always wind the mechanism by hand after replacing any parts to make sure you got the alignment correct. Nothing more disappointing than hearing the crunch of a metal rack shearing off nice new nylon gears .

Ah....yeah....I meant that the front loading mechanism reaches its final position.
The mode switch had tarnish so cleaned that up then with a little better look at it I noticed a couple of teeth missing from the small cog on the VXL2670. Bit hard to see.

    VXL2670 $13 from WES.

Have you ever tried a fibreglass pen ?....They do an excellent job of cleaning contacts etc.

    Thanks guys.

If you want a non abrasive method of cleaning contacts give Phosphoric acid a try, I use the stuff all the time.

We live in a throw away society, surely it would be cheaper and easier to replace the entire unit. Not even a new one, but someone like Cashies or eBay should have something suitable for a few bucks.

    Noooo....can't be like that....lol
If I just threw everything away when it broke I wouldn't learn how to fix them.
