Default Help with connecting 5.1 speakers to flatscreen tv?

Hi, new here but thought it might be worth a shot asking around.

For some time now we've been using an adapter to change the standard red/white cable from our dvd player, to a 3 plug 5.1 for our speakers, however we just bought a media centre that replaces the traditional RCA for an HDMI cable. Since we can no longer get our sound through the same method i'm trying to think of ways to let us get external sound, as the internal speakers on the tv aren't very good.

There doesn't seem to be anywhere to plug the 5.1 cables directly to the tv, however there is a headphone jack on the side. would it be possible to find an adapter to let us continue using the speakers as a generic audio out?

does the media center have a spidf ( optical ) plug and if the tv also had the optical out then
connect the two and in the tv settings have that as the sound preference

that is how mine is done

spidf on tv to spidf amp

also some more details on Tv model and media center specs would also help in
working out a way to have it all work
dont say linux if i wanted it id install it

More precise info on how you have everything connected is needed please.

What 5.1 amplifier are you using with your speakers?

Does it have digital coaxial or optical inputs?

Does your TV have digital coaxial or optical outputs?

Most TV's will only output digital sound from the internal tuner.

It's possible to use a headphone output, but there will be an impedance/load mismatch, and you do not get true surround sound, as you wouldn't have with just L/R previously.

If your DVD player only has analogue audio outputs, the cheapest and most effective solution would be to upgrade the DVD player to one which has HDMI output, (eg: Blu-Ray) which will drastically improve picture quality as well, especially if you were only using composite video connections.

ok, so i'm back with some pics and diagrams since i admit i suck at explaining things.
TV model is Toshiba 40CV700A, new media player is Sony BDP-S3100. Our speakers are logitecch, can't find a model number, but they're your standard 2 lefts, 2 rights, 1 centre setup. (pretty much this without the bass: )

This is what our old setup was:
This is what i hope to change it to:

Pics of the tv plugs: and
Pics of speaker adapter we've been using:
Pics of back of new player:

So our foxtel and old video/dvd would come to the tv through a single yellow cable while we diverted the red and white cables to our speaker adapter, which we'd swap from one devide to the next as needed.
What i'm hoping to get is some way to have a generic connection from tv to speaker to redirect all audio to external since our tv speakers distort.

There doesn't appear to be any way to plug the speakers directly to the TV, and when i tested the headphone jack on the side i could get (very) faint sound from a single side fo the speakers at a time while playing media from the new HDMI player. Plugging any of the 3 speaker cables to the green plug labelled HDMI 1 / PC audio didn't seem to achieve anything (i've since moved the player from HDMI 4 to HDMI 1 anyway).

At this point i'm pretty sure i'll need at least some kind of adapter.

PS. If headphone adapting does work, it makes no difference if our speakers lose the surround sounds aspect since they're all frontal anyway, we just want decent sound.

Try plugging into the VIDEO/TV output jacks on the back of the TV, (bottom row of connectors below the ANT input.)

Not sure if HDMI, (or for that matter, any other external input audio) sound is redirected through these ports. The manual implies that it isn't, I've never hooked one of these up to a sound system, so can't say either.

Set the audio mode to MPEG in the SOUND menu.

It wouldn't, as this is an input port, not an output port.

If the audio output jacks I mentioned before don't work, then most likely one of for the headphone socket.

You'll need to play with the volume setting on the TV so you don't overdrive the speaker amplifier, although I am concerned abouth this statement:

If by this you mean the sub-woofer, do you have this? Because it's my understanding this item contains the signal processing circuitry, & the amplifiers, for the satellite speakers.

Not 100% sure if it helpful in your case but anyway:
There are HDMI to RCA adapters, like .
You also find RCA switches like .

The problem I see is that your TV does not seem to have any audio output and the digital one seems to be input only too.
Connecting media player and Foxtel using a is no problem. Combining the audio from the RCA outputs is easy too but you get stuck when it comes to the sound of the TV.
Without an output on the TV I only see using a set top box as an option.
You can feed all into one switch and the TV would be just used as a monitor.
You can also get HDMI splitter, so you combine all devices in a switch and the output goes over the splitter to the TV and speakers.

IMHO option the best option would be to use a proper amplifier instead of these speakers....
