You can easily update the Garmin map. It's as simple as replacing the relevant .img file with the latest one. You'll find links to the latest maps and instructions elsewhere on this forum.

Does that also apply to the Nuvi 255w.?
I got one of these from a friend that had never been opened for 4 years, Still in the box. Connected it up to computer and logged into Garmin and got a free map update (2014) Plus a software update so ok for a while I think.( they said in the manual that first connection to a satillite would enable me to a free update, and that worked ok) 2015 you advertise wasn't an option from their website but no worries on that.
Need to learn a bit about these Garmins as I am a tomtom user... noticed the speed limit was wrong on my first trip to the golf club so no idea why they are out of date on that one which has been 70 k for years.
    Anyway thanks for any replies

Yes you can update that as per my tutorial at the top of the Garmin Forum.

2 choices of maps on here, Sensis & Navteq. Inaccuracies in both depending on where you live or where you're traveling.
I run both & switch between when needed.

Speed limits are a bit iffy on both mapsets unfortunately, by the time they get the updated speed limit onto the mapset, the speed limit has been revised or changed in some cases & in others the maps are just wrong & never seem to be corrected so you need to identify the correct sped limit by the roadside signs to be safe.
There are places to report these issues to the map makers if you feel compelled.
    Cheers, Tiny

    @kaygill
2x0[W] and 2x5[W] are all the same as far as map storage and naming convention is concerned on unit and SD. In Tiny's helpful thread: , scroll down to 'For Older Garmin GPS'. Not sure if it's been updated regarding 2nd map on SD, but with latest firmware 2xx[W], 465, 7xx and related units can have two maps in sd:/Garmin named gmapsupp.img and gmapsup1.img.

About the nuMaps Guarantee, you'd have been given 2014.40 Sensis because that's the OEM mapping data for all AU/NZ localised car series prior to Feb 2012 when Garmin shifted to Navteq AU/NZ CN exclusively as factory loaded mapping. However, Garmin is only issuing Sensis updates twice a year now, so 2015.10 was skipped and the next will be 2015.20 which is imminent but although not yet officially released it is [don't ask how ]. HERE [Navteq] is still being updated quarterly and you can also use that in future on your 255W rather than Sensis or both and switch enabling as Tiny suggested. An interesting side-benefit of having both on-board is that the POIs from both maps will show on the display, even when only one is enabled [never check both, or there may be problems when routing]. I suspect that the Sensis updates are not as complete as we might like now, which may explain the incorrect SLI display which is now perhaps corrected in 2015.20 for that road you mentioned but i wouldn't hold my breath. A major road built 18 years ago which i travel on almost daily has been always been 90kmh changing to 80kph at a certain point, but both Sensis and HERE have it continuing as 90 for another couple of clicks inbound. Another road parallel to that one was reduced from 70 to 60 over a year ago but still the SLI stubbornly shows 70 for both maps.

Thanks for your reply. Have just followed the update and have successfully loaded the 2015.20 map. Now I need to travel that route I mentioned and see if the speed limit has been corrected.... will let you know later

You can easily check in simulation. In 2x5W, from main page: Tools > Settings > System > GPS Simulator > On > OK. You can then navigate normally as if you're driving.

Good one, Did that and as you said the speed hasn't changed....still wrong. With the tomtom you can report this and maybe they will take notice. Us Kiwis are not that important...
Can you tell me what the other file downloads are for.? Like 3D and JVC and Map Source Data. I just downloaded the IMG file and that was all I thought I needed.
First time with a Garmin so a bit "green" on all that. Ok with a TomTom, just grab the map and activate.
Good to learn about other systems.

You're important to us! [every 2nd tree-lopper in AU is a Kiwi].

Your 255W doesn't support JCV [Junction View] or 3D [3D Buildings and Landmarks] so don't worry about them. The 'Map Source Data' moniker is just the older naming for a PC Instal version/gmap folder. With the map installed to your computer, you can use BaseCamp/MapInstall to select only parts [tiles] of the map to install to your device. For instance, you might only want to have NZ [or just North or South Island, or even just your home city] available and not worry about scungy old AU at all. MapSource [the program] is now obsolete and unsupported by Garmin, it's been replaced by BaseCamp/MapInstall which previously cost about 30 bucks but recently has been made available by Garmin for no charge:

    Info Page:
    Code:
    http://www.garmin.com/en-US/shop/downloads/basecamp
    Download page:
    Code:
    http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=4435
There is excellent on-board help in BaseCamp and i suggest you watch the 'Welcome to BaseCamp' introductory video which will pop-up when you first start it. When you select 'Maps' > 'Install Maps' BC will invoke MapInstall automatically for you to select portions of the map to send to the device.

A couple of queries before I continue with this?
When I plug the GPS into the computer the program called "Garmin Express" opens up and shows I have updates available. After saying yes to these I now have map 2015.20 (I had already updated this previously with a file from this garmin details page) but it carried on anyway and came back with it installed again.
Now it says under settings: GPS Software V 4.10b. Audio V 1.10. Software V 7.60. and Basemap 2.00
This software you showed me called "BaseCamp software v 4.3.5". Does this over right all of the above? If so will "Garmin Express" show something else next time?
It looks as if my GPS is being updated for free for now and maybe on Lifetime Updates.
As I mentioned before the unit had never been opened since purchased over 4 years ago.
If I am getting life time maps would I not just leave things as they are (even though the map is the full Aust and NZ version)?
Sorry for these questions but just want to make sure before I go ahead.
As Garmin Express opens when I connect the GPS would I need to close that first and then run the BaseCamp_435.exe with the unit still plugged in??
    Tnx for your patience.

In that case you must have Lifetime maps on that 255W, nice find.

First need to get you head around what these programs do. GarminExpress will download anything needed to update your unit, e.g. unit firmware [they call it 'software' you've got Version 7.60], other software for GPS, traffic receivers etc, file such as voices, etc, blah blah as well as maps. The maps can be downloaded as a complete image file to directly replace the OEM map on the unit [and ONLY that original area as factory loaded]. They can also be downloaded by GE as a gmap folder onto your PC from which you can then use BaseCamp/MapInstall to load only a part of the map to your unit. By selecting 'Advanced Options' in GE you can choose to have either the full img file loaded to the unit or the gmap folder put on your PC, or you can choose both. This is one of my units with LM:

In the 3rd image above, you can see there's 2 map updates. The second is the PC install version. If i'd chosen to install to the computer only, that's the only one i'd get for now [can still load the full image to the device later though if i changed my mind]. As you said though, and if you don't need the space on the unit, there is no problem to just download the complete AU/NZ img file only which is the default if you don't press advanced options.

That's due to the map you loaded manually not being recognised as valid, so Garmin Express put the valid map with Unlock code on your unit.

Maybe, Good Luck with that, however don't count your chickens yet, the old NuMaps Guarantee was for 90 days, so if a map became available in that 90 day period form registration of the device (first turn on) it will be free. After that GE will tell you there is a map available for purchase. There is a hiccup there though as the NuMaps Guarantee stated only one free map update & you received 2 already. Cross your fingers.
All software/firmware updates available for the device will be free for the life of the device, regardless of lifetime map or not.

There should be plenty of room for the full map on the device; so leave it as is until you need more internal memory space.

As Surething has said, BaseCamp is a PC map viewing program which has new versions being released frequently & your Basemap 2.00 is the internal basemap on your GPS which will not change in number. That is the version of Basemap your unit is commissioned with. They are 2 very different items & should not be confused.

Yes you can run BaseCamp with the GPS plugged in or plug in after, should not matter if Garmin Express opens at the same time, they are 2 separate programs from the same manufacturer & both can have access to your GPS.
You can also do as you say & plug in the GPS; then after Garmin express opens, close it, then install BaseCamp (if you haven't already & this only needs to be installed once then you can update it at will) & open Garmin BaseCamp, it's a very good program BTW. You don't have to use it though, however it is useful for trip planning & route viewing on your PC if you like that sort of thing.

    Hope that helps,
    Cheers,
    Tiny

Are you aware that for NZ there are also free and up to date autorouting maps available for your Garmin GPS?
Updated weekly. If you find an error or addition, report it and it will be on the map next week. Beat that Mr. Garmin!

    Full info .

The latest mapset can be found - always go to the very last post - currently 20140830 - 3 days old.

A NZ Topo 50K mapset is also freely available.

Thanks to all of you for the help with my Garmin. I am slowly getting the hang of it.
Have saved this location for any other questions I may have. Just need a bit of driving from here to there to get used to it.
    Again thank you all

Just been out and about with the 250W and a couple of questions please.
This model doesn't seem to have speed cameras available (or am I wrong) drove past one in town that has been there for years and no alerts.
The file gmapsupp.img that I downloaded was put into the Garmin folder along with the gmapprom.img and nothing different noticed.
The "supp" one was never there before. What is that for and is it needed for this model?
No voice warning for exceeding the speed limit, probably not on this model.
    Cheers

Safety camera files need to added separately. Your old 255W may have had a small Cyclops sample gpi file named accordingly, but from memory nothing is available for New Zealand from them anyway and the limited sample would have been for AU only. I'll be posting the links to obtain 'AU' [safety_camera_australia.gpi] files in this thread: . Although the file name indicates 'safety_camera_australia', it seems Garmin has happily lumped AU & NZ into the same file:
    Code:
    https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/shop-by-accessories/digital-downloads/safety-cameras/cyclops-safety-cameras-australia-and-new-zealand/prod68086.html
You can also add 3rd party redlight and speed camps, just google it for NZ.

The file gmapsupp.img that I downloaded was put into the Garmin folder along with the gmapprom.img and nothing different noticed.
The "supp" one was never there before. What is that for and is it needed for this model?
In the Garmin folder there are several map names usable for detail maps. For the factory loaded OEM usually only gmapprom.img is used. For a supplementary map gmapsupp.img is used. Other names which will work in 2xx/W series are for sure gmapprom1.img [and maybe gmapoem.img but only for some maps types]. On an SD card you can also have 2 detail maps in a Garmin folder with latest fw V7.60 which you have. Naming is gmapsupp.img and gmapsup1.img.

If you now have the CNNT sensis map twice in the Garmin folder named as gmapprom and gmapsupp get rid of the unlocked one you downloaded from here.

No voice warning for exceeding the speed limit, probably not on this model.
    Cheers
No, no voice warning possible and not even an audible 'ding' type of over-speed alert sorry.

no, no voice warning possible and not even an audible 'ding' type of over-speed alert sorry.
why you not ask someone who really know... ? 90% every sureting post is copy other forum, not realy by self understanding...

I'll tell you an example: you can not use the maps for the new device, the mud?, you can if you just ask ... but do not ask gpspower

any map with .gma, just ask with PM, also new protection devices...

YOU NOT NEED UNLOCKER, also cams is possible
