when which ever occurs first - the end of Sept or when the snow melts!![]()
Leroy
Hey all,
The family and I will be headin' down to Melbourne in late August for a christening. Just wondering how long the snow season lasts down there? We will be there for 4 days around the 28th, from Friday to Monday, and the saturday before the christening we were hoping to take a day trip so our youngest can see snow (we took the oldest back when he was 3). Is there anywhere good for kids within a couple of hours from Melb that has plenty at that time of the year? Only have a day to spare unfortunatly, so within 3 or so hours drive would be good.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Cheers

Depends on how much snow they have and how long it lasts. I have heard stories about people skiing on the October long weekend.
Ive been to Mt Hotham and Falls Creek and think Falls would be good for kids but not sure how far they are from Melbourne. We travelled from Newcastle and stayed at Bright.

From Melb there is Mt Buller, Mt Donnabuang(sp?) for sight seeing or Lake Mountain, through Marysville. You could hire a taboggan at Marysville for the kids. Just need to check the conditions closer to the date.

Where is the closes Snow / Mountain from Gold Coast QLD
Just in case i wanted to take the kids for a drive to see the snow for the weekend LOL
When you do things right, people won't be sure that you have done anything at all
That would be one hell of a weekend travelling.
Closest would be NSW in Perisher or Thredbo. But if you flew to Melbourne and went to the VIC snow i think it would cut down on travel time.

Mt Buller is my choice from Melbourne.
Extensive snowmaking system to keep the cover up as long as conditions permit.
I'v skied into October on Buller in some seasons.
They have a couple of great toboggan areas for kids (of all ages)
Highly unlikely they won't have sufficient snow for snowplay in late Aug.

I'm not the pheasant plucker, I'm the pheasant pluckers son. I'm only plucking pheasants till the pheasant plucker comes.
stanthorpe sometimes snows about 200k sw of brisbane. so maybe a 3hr drive or so, but you would have to time it, because it is rare.
I think we stop at every McDonalds between Newcastle and Jindabyne.
Last time i looked Newcastle didn't have a McDonalds LOL

If you only want a bit of snow for the kids to throw at each other then Mt Baw Baw & St Gwinear may have some a couple of hours from Melbourne. You would have to check the ski report or jump on one of the snow cam sites.
Don't forget you will need to carry or hire snow chains whichever way you go.
Cheers Craig
