Default Do you donate to buskers ?

I have seen a few really woefull buskers lately , people who cant play a musical instrument really shouldnt do it. But maybe they are getting lots of sympathy money because they are bad ?

So do you/would you throw some money in the hat of someone that is terrible at what they do ?

I'm someone who when he goes shopping knows what he wants and knows where he is going. I'm the sort of person who walks down the middle of the mall in the rain because the sides have too many slow walkers there.

Thus buskers just piss me off. They usually have big circles out talking up lots of room, they get shitty when you walk through them, and they cause crowds of gawkers to stand around just getting in the way so no one can get past.

You can guess from this that I generally dont give them money. I agree with you though Sanity, the standard of busker is getting worse and worse, it seems like every kid with an instrument goes out and starts practicing it in the mall. Also have gotten worse since they have allowed electronic amplification too, which makes it worse because its louder and the acoustics of where they are is awful.

My sons mate goes to Freo and plays Violin for 2 hours every Sunday. He's 15 and reckons he gets a minimum of $60 every time. Good money for a 15yr old.
I don't like the bigger kids who hang out at traffic lights and clean your windscreen, whether you need it or not without asking. Then you feel you have to pay them. I know its not busking but they are both unrequested services that seem to be everywhere these days. But I do usually shell out for the buskers, at least they are having a go.

I'll make a contribution to those whom I've stopped and listened to, because they are good entertainers.

These performers are a small minority, though.

There's some brilliant talent amongst buskers, just needing a break.

Some do have regular jobs and busk in their spare time, mainly for the experience of performing, not for the monetary gain, which is usually not that much anyway.

It's a bit OT, however.... it's a bit like some (drawing/painting )artists.... who use chalk on footpaths... some of those people are extremely talented. If only they'd put their drawings on canvas, I'm sure they'd sell heaps.

Dont get me started on windscreen cleaners.

I pulled up at the lights once and this local loony ( whos face looks like a tub of yogurt thats been left in the fridge for a month ) did some dukes of hazard slide across my bonnett armed with a squidgy and a bucket. I told him to get the #### off but he wouldnt , he demanded money which I wouldnt give him and he then tried to wash my rear window as well ! I put the car in to reverse and ran him over to teach him a lesson.

I reported it to the police who seemed to think running over him was fair enough. My wife was disgusted in me and didnt talk to me for the rest of the day.

I don't normally give to anyone performing/begging on the streets.

However, there is an annual Buskers Fesytival in Coffs Harbour each year, and they are fantastic. If I like them, I'll throw some coin in the tin.

The windscreen wiper scam is illegal I believe in NSW.

I try not to give money to buskers/beggars in the street because it only encourages them.

Let them clean my windscreen years ago in the "Valley" Qld, F%$^N funny when I said you didn't mention cost - green light GO!

As for buskers - Take change - they have no idea what you put in - makes for interesting interactions.

Your a winner on 2 counts sanity.

Running over a windscreen washer so everyone benefits & not having to listen to the wife nag for a day. I would be doing it more often.

I use to work for an old famous ex pro Boxer (retired) from the 70's years ago, when one day i was driving with him and had one of these blokes start washing my windscreen. I told the washer to fark off and not touch the car but he continued and insisted on seeing some money for his efforts.
Guess what happened to the windscreen washer when my Ex boss got out?

Edit; Some buskers are entertaining, if i stop and stay long enough, and enjoy it, i throw money.
Its very rare to find a entertaining busker, most are just crap chasing money.

Definitely worth it then....

I was driving the wifes car and had one just walk up in the car park and start cleaning the windscreen. I got out and gave him a rocket....In front of everyone I yelled that he should go somewhere else to get the loot for his next fix...he shot through real quick...

f*ck him, I'd just washed the car and he splashed greasy crap all over it. If they ask, fine, I'll say no....its the ones that don't that piss me off no end.

If I stop and listen to an entertaining busker I might throw in a coin...pretty rare though.

Cheers

F**k I laughed when I read this...its good to know that your the real deal Sanity. You take no shit in the forums or in the real world...respect...

I have only donated to a busker once and that was an awesome South American percussion band that was touring Australia about a decade ago. They were playing in the Burke St. Mall and they just stopped the place. They were unbelievably good. So I bought their CD and it was unbelievably shit! Most of the time I just find them annoying, but I have no music appreciation at all.

Why cant the coppers get rid of that guy cleaning windows on the corner of Vic. Parade & Hoddle St.? He has been pissing people off for years. Maybe we should do a whip around and get Sanity to sort him out...

About the only time I have done it is when I saw an old guy and his dog by his side playing the harmonica and he had his war medals on, when you looked at him you could tell he was ashamed of singing for his supper....yeah he was a wino

10 bucks went in the hat.
