You would have to pull out the history books on that one, but I cant remember ever seeing a result that bad.

I could not believe the figures I saw when I turned sky news on last night for a look. Labor in QLD are no longer even a political party, just a few survivors of the cull huddling together.

And they are talking about Bligh staying on as leader because all their "talent" lost their seats !

It's interesting to see the changes that have occurred at state level since 2007 when federal labor got elected.

    from:

I know most commentators say state results are on local issues but in this case I tend to think the size of the swing is a message to federal labor that most people are not happy with how things are being done by themselves.

I cannot see how singing the joys of the LNP, who, a few years ago gave yo Russ Heinze & Joh Bejlke Petersonon to run the State.

What this means is that the LNP can push their own bills through without having them reviewed by the Opposition.

True, but in Queensland, with no upper house, a majority of 1 or 41 allows the same ability to push bills through.

The situation they are in is no ones fault but their own.

Most of the Labor party are still in denial as to why it happened. " Its because she is a woman " is a classic NFI response from them. Running a dirty mud throwing campaign at Newman's family came back and bit them in a big way and made Bligh look as shifty as the ALP dirty tricks department that sanctioned it. Then there was the "begging" in the last week for votes...they looked cheap and desperate and people saw that.

Good luck to Newman dealing with QLD Labor's 80 billion dollar debt they have left behind. The Kennett Government in Victoria in the 90's took over a debt ridden state from Labor and sold our assets to get us out of debt. It worked ( but labor have since done the same thing ....again)

But Newman got beaten to that one by Bligh, she has already sold them off and still has a ton of debt. But as I said, good luck to him. The people could not have spoken any louder or any clearer in dismissing the Bligh government.

Oh, and if Gillard thinks this doesnt have repurcussions for her she is dreaming. Thats how on the nose Labor is with people. Including traditional Labor voters.

A few photos I have seen lately show why......Liberal candidates alone in jeans and t shirts. Labor candidates in Armani suits surrounded by advisors.

Well you guys in Tasmania voted for the GREENS and look what you got! You've lost all your industries and part of your fishing and now have to rely on handouts from other states to survive. If you think the LNP has radical plans for the future you need to do a review on the GREENS policies! I think the faster we get them out of the Senate the better off Australia will be.

I just hope he does the right things to help the state and not just his family, IMHO I think his wife's open and public fondling will become a big embarrassment, I can see him give speeches from behind a large podium to give her room

After all, he can do as he likes now till next election, there's no one to say boo!

    Let's just wait and see

I know, and successive Premiers & Treasurers since Jim Bacon have wrecked Tassie.

Believe me, the people that voted Greens in the last election are having second thoughts.. The Greens have tied Tassie up so much that there just isn't the money or industry down here any more.

And tp cap it all off, the Libs are missing in action.

I digress, I hope Newman does what is best for the banana benders & drags them kicking and screaming into the 21st century.

I just hope that Joh hasn't rubbed off on him!!!

I heard the same one this morning with a Toyota Tarago

I just read that Bligh has quit as leader

ANNA Bligh has announced she'll resign from the Queensland parliament after Labor's annihilation at the ballot box.

Her resignation will allow Labor to try to parachute a new leader in to her South Brisbane electorate.

Ms Bligh just held onto her seat, but she was one of only seven Labor MPs left after Queensland overwhelmingly voted for Campbell Newman's Liberal National Party.

Labor could be left with as little as seven seats after "bloodbath" election in Queensland.

Disaffected voters deserted the government to deliver Liberal National Party leader Campbell Newman a massive majority last night.

The LNP could end up with as many as 78 seats in the 89-seat parliament, with Labor expected to hold just seven, the ABC election calculator shows.

For Labor, who held 51 seats going into the election, the bitter recriminations have begun.

Ms Bligh will go down in history as presiding over the worst defeat Labor has ever seen in the state. Ten, and possibly 11, of her ministers have lost their seats.

Meanwhile, the victory puts the former Brisbane lord mayor into the record books for landing the premiership without having served a day in parliament.

    Blame game

Retiring water minister Stephen Robertson has sheeted the blame home to Labor's personal attack campaign against Mr Newman and his family.

He described it as "terrible'' and blamed Labor's inner sanctum, including Ms Bligh, her ousted deputy Andrew Fraser, attorney-general Paul Lucas and their advisers.

Mr Robertson also took aim at Kevin Rudd over his decision to challenge for the federal Labor leadership so close to the Queensland poll.

"The self-indulgence of what Rudd did, knowing that there was an election campaign going on in his home state, in my mind, is unforgivable,'' he said on ABC Radio.

Ms Bligh conceded defeat at 8.15pm local time, saying it was "absolutely clear" Queensland had spoken and wanted a change of government.

"I congratulate the Liberal National Party on an historic victory. I congratulate Campbell Newman and I wish him all the best in forming a new government," she said.

    Responsibility

Mr Newman, who was given a deafening welcome by the party faithful, said he felt humbled by such a monumental win.

"You have spoken decisively and emphatically and delivered a strong government so that we can deliver for you and get this great state back on track," he said.

"We are all humbled by the responsibility that you have given us a responsibility that actually weighs heavily, but it is cheerfully accepted."

In thanking Ms Bligh, Mr Newman said the former premier should be acknowledged for her "inspirational" leadership during the floods and cyclone Yasi.

The pummeling was as harsh in traditional Labor heartland near the city as in regional areas, where swings of more than 20 per cent were experienced.

The landslide defeat was attributed to a loss of faith in Ms Bligh after key election promises were broken and a negative campaign focused on character attacks and smear.

The polling booths had barely been closed when former Labor premier Peter Beattie sent out a soul-searching Tweet.

"It is going to be a sad night for the Queensland ALP," he said. "We need a strong Opposition in the interests of Queensland."

    Katter's boy

Bob Katter and his Katter's Australian Party (KAP) picked up two seats and expected to collect at least one other.

Mr Katter's son Rob won the seat of Mt Isa, making him the third generation Katter to enter politics. However, KAP star recruit, former Queensland and Test cricketer Carl Rackemann, failed to take Nanango as expected, with the former One Nation seat won by the LNP.

The result follows the devastating defeat Labor experienced in NSW at the 2011 state election, where it was reduced to just 20 seats.

So great was the loss in NSW that Labor officials predict it will take up to two more terms before the party can recover enough to be within striking distance of winning government again.

The result will hurt even more for Labor in Queensland, where the party took 15 years to get back into government after being reduced to just 11 MPs at the 1974 state election.

Labor insiders said the decision by the Bligh government to scrap an 8c-a-litre fuel subsidy and sell $15 billion worth of assets after being elected left voters feeling sold-out.

While Ms Bligh recovered slightly following her handling of the Queensland floods crisis, the damage had been done.

A senior Labor source said the result sounds a warning to the Gillard government.

Imagine what would have happened if Bligh didnt get that "popularity" during the QLD floods ? No seats ? Its mind boggling.

Looks like I didnt read my own link properly. I thought she only resigned as leader, apparently she is doing more than that.

Yes, I cant see Labor winning the seat in a by election. I dont think I have ever seen any political party get smashed and fall apart on this scale before. Wow, what next ?
