Ive recently had full dental work done, I hadnt been to a dentist in 20 years, And it was bloody painful having teeth, gums and roots drilled cleaned to remove 20 years of built up gunk, I had 6 fillings replaced, surprisingly I had no cavitys even the dentist was amazed, Sanity dont put up with pain, you just dont enjoy or look foward to your favorite foods or drinks, its only 2 teeth if they havent rotted to bad the will clean and fill them, a few days later you'll be eating crackling like never before

The last couple of times I went to the dentist, it was great.
(In Newcastle west, opposite the 'Sacred Heart Church')

The time before (A couple of years ago), not so great.

My SO selected a dentist for me. It was at Hamilton
He gives me a painful scale & clean, along with some fillings. It wasn't fun
There was one that he said needed extracting too & I would need to book another appointment for it.
I booked an appointment on the was out thinking dentist had still not changed much...

So I'm back a week later.
I told him it really hurt last time & to up the anesthetic this time. So he does.
I have the newspaper with me.
I read it as the gear takes effect and he goes off elsewhere.
It has a story in it about a pedophile dentist ... From Hamilton.
Apparently he liked hurting people in his dentist chair too, particularly kids

I am much happier with my new dentists

You guys scared of the needle are all whimps, ive got pliers here for you all in case you prefer no anesthetic. LOL

Me, ive got a mouth of crooked teeth that like to collect food, a little yellow from years of smoking and only go every 5 years or so for a scale and clean.

Last time i cracked a tooth, i didnt see a dentist straight away, it got infected, needles didnt work, 2 nurses held me down while the dentist pulled, by the time it was out, one of the nurses was in tears and the waiting room had cleared out, i think the screaming made the patients a little nervous about the dentist.

Charged me $420 for one wisdom tooth over here. No surgery just a pick and some anasthetic. Had to pay as i couldnt deal with the pain anymore.

I went a couple of months ago to have a tooth pulled out after I held out a year until I couldn't take the pain anymore.
Dentist marked probably 10 teeth for extraction although they are not giving me problems.
I only permitted the one tooth that did.

Had to give me three shots, three pricks each, so a total of 9 stabbings before I was numb enough.
Hurt like hell as they needed to jab me right into the nerve, at least that was what it felt like.

The actual extraction was totally painless and also after the anesthetic wore off, I felt nothing
I wonder if they had just pulled without injection, if it would have been that bad.

I posted my experience as a warning to Sanity and others, not to do my same mistake of holding off going to the Dentist until it gets really, really bad.

My wife ended up staying 4 days in the hospital once after an extraction that didn't go well.
Her mouth got so swollen that she could hardly breath.

A lot of issues can be solved with a root canal quite painlessly if done early enough.

    Hi Sanity
Have you looked at this option? All you need is a referral from your GP and a dentist which offers the service.

I took it up a couple of years ago and got a great outcome.
Thirteen fillings and a root canal all at no cost to me.
I drew the line when they wanted to give me a crown which would have cost me quite a bit. Two years on the temporary filling in the root canal tooth is still fine. Oh, and by the way for all you wimps, all of this was done without anaesthetic of any kind. From my experience, the injections are far more painful than the proceedure although extractions might be another matter.

I went to one in Mayfield years ago. Took him about an hour to pull one back tooth. Hurt like hell and he was pretty rough. It didn't heal properly afterwards and when I went back about 2 weeks later, he packed it with iodine soaked cotton wool. That still didn't fix it and even after two years I could still feel jawbone poking through my gum and it still hurt like hell. I went to a Chinese bloke here down the bay and when he xray'd it he said there were still two roots left in my jawbone. He then spent about an hour and a half removing the roots which were broken off flush with the bone. It did unnerve me a bit, when part way through it I felt/heard a metallic "chink" just as he said "Oops". When I asked him what was wrong he said he just broke the tip of his dental tool off in my jawbone. He finally got both the roots out and the dental tip, and took an xray just to make sure it was all OK. Amazingly, although the whole operation was pretty excruciating, it was fairly painless even when he put the needles in.. and he put heaps in. Lower jaw, so he put the block in the joint, which is always the worst I reckon.

I have had that many tests and needles lately I dont think dentistry will worry me. I had a core biopsy a couple of weeks ago where they inserted a giant needle in to my chest that ripped out pieces of tissue for analysis. It made my toes curl

I can imagin, I have false teeth & the last time I went to the dentist I had 8 extractions. I had worked myself up into such a state that I couldn't talk.

After the teeth were pulled I sat in the waiting room waiting for my wife to come and get me, I felt pretty crook, raced off to the toilet & threw up all over their toilet, blood & food everywhere.

Apparently the adrenilen was so high that I needed to get it out of my system.

I am not frightened of many things but dentists scare the shit out of me.

I know, I am a first class wimp.

    Cool

When I was a kid I used to go to a dentist opposite Newcastle railway station (no names) who went on to become professor of dentistry at Newcastle Uni. While he was probably a very good dentist he would never believe me when I told him how much it was hurting when he drilled my back teeth. Front teeth I can do with no anethstetic. It wasn't the drill but the cold water they used to cool it. He used to give my parents tranquelliser pills for me to take 1/2 hr before the appointment then fill my mouth with injections but it made no difference. That was the other thing that was disturbing. The injections went in the roof of my mouth not the gums. You could feel the needle up behind your nose. Didn't hurt but was very unpleasant. After I left school I only went twice in the next 20 yrs when I had a toothache I could no longer ignore. For the last 10 yrs I've gone yearly & compared to my younger days it is like chalk & cheese. I now have no hesitation in going but I still break out in a sweat when ever he goes near my back teeth.
Having said all that my dentist is someone who is unlikely to ever get a Xmas card off me.

The only problem I have with dentistry is that I produce a lot of saliva which means I have to swallow constantly. Sometimes it's not easy when you have a drill in your mouth.

Almost 10 years (and only for a clean). I clean once a day, and have never had any dental complaints of any kind. The water supplies I used from birth up until about the same date as last appointment where unfluoridated during that time.

My biggest problem was that there wasn't much in the way of dental hygene back when I was a kidlet and most of my generation have false teeth,
