Let me firstly say that this weekend will be the first and definately the last time I fly with Jetstar.
Their web booking site is an abomination where every box that needs to ticked or selected to incurr a cost loads already ticked leaving you to untick it. Miss it and bingo you pay.
Yes I did miss one and when I called customer (don't) care the muncher told me I should have taken more care.
The one I missed was when in bold letters it displayed seats their system had allocated, I didnt check the tiny x clear seat allocation button below so I was charged $5 per pax for allocating my own seats. FFs all I did was click to the next page.
The customer (don't) care muncher vaguely threatened if I had the prior seat allocation removed and the money refunded then me and my 84 yr old mother in law will not be seated in the same portion of the plane. (I'll probably get arrested the Coolangatta on Saturday if they pull that one)
After pleading to have my call escalated to a supervisor about 5 times while I was told each time that it was their policy not to escalate seat allocation problems. After the 6th request when I said I didn't care what it cost I was going to cancel the whole booking and write to Jetstar nominating the muncher as the reason the call was refered but only after the punitive half hour wait "until a supervisor became available". Very busy those supervisors.
What ensued could only be described as comedic. The supervisor didn't want to know about it and did not deviate from his script no matter what I threw at him. It wasn't until I caught him in a lie and asked if it was him or the original consultant who had lied as they gave me conflicting stories that hurriedly spoke to the consultant then immediately agreed to refund the seat fee.
Talk about money hungry
$5 per pax for seat alloation
$12 per pax to move to a seat with more leg room
$25 per pax to move seat at front of plane.
$17 to earn my Qantas Frequent Flyer points
$100 for all of the above and the ability to changes dates and names on bookings.
$8.50 per pax to pay by CC or Paypal (no fee if I signed up to some other scheme I have never heard of and paid through it)
I guess I should have been more vigilant on the web site, I saw and unchecked the travel insurance charge and the carbon neutral charge and the donation panel (I can't remember what it was for) but I missed the the tiny x to clear the pre allocated seats.
Don't be fooled by the lure of cheap flights.
The best part of their web site is that if you click back and change something a pop up flashes up, tells you that you are having problems with your booking and click here to start a chat session with a person intent on selling you something more.
I am a Qantas flyer on the rare occasion that I do fly but I can assure if I am in the need of a "cheap" fare it will be with Virgin where what you see is what you get.
Here endeth the rant.
F*ck Virgin...
Fly Qantas, get a meal, get a wine, get where you need to be and pay a tad more (not always)....there is no substitute....cheap is cheap....

I flew to QLD Brisbane with my son a few months ago to look at a car, we watched the Tiger website for prices and noted that as the days progressed closer to the date we needed to fly that the prices were dropping.
I ended up booking 2 seats one way (with the intention of driving back if i liked the car) and they ended up costing $300-$350 each due to a long weekend.
Flight was shit, everything you wanted like food and drinks were extra.
Didnt buy the car, a few hours later i walked back into Brisbane airport and walked up the the Qantas counted thinking im going to get shafted, ended up costing me $180 a ticket to fly back in comfort with food and drink.
Go figure.

Perhaps they have changed their booking processes a little, as back in January booked a Jetstar flight from Avalon to Sydney, no issues, until it came to payment with a $15 fee REGARDLESS of payment option selected. I went through every option determined to loose (or even reduce the fee) and it wouldn't change!
Small win, was allocated a seat in the front row, possibly beacuse no-one else paid the surcharge in booking that flight, and plus I was there like 2 hours before departure!

Yes Jetstar are well below par, i had booking 26th july to thailand, got to airport at 2245 for midnite flight only to be told the flight was canceled, no text no email to let me know, told to come back tomorrow, get a cab home and we will reimburse yeah sure, sent them an email no response good luck last time for me.

they worked well for us a couple of years back when we had to make a few short flights between Necastle and Brisbane. Cheapest by a country mile and never had an issue with them.
I think this sums it up!!

Drove my mate and his wife to the Airport and they were EXACTLY 90 seconds pass checkin and they shafted them, and the worse thing was that the Tart at the counter was getting off on it
I have made it my Mission to recommend any airline other that Jetstar
90 Farkin Seconds unreal hey LOL

That's a joke MrRadio. I'd of gone off my dial as well.
In saying that, recently my wife and I flew to Langkawi for a much belated honeymoon. We flew airasia at $169 each way. There were seat allocation fee's and you had to pay for drinks etc etc but it was all very cheap. Less than $200. The flying was just as good as any OS trip I've had before.
Stick it up Jetstar. Fair enough to add on some costs but they aren't that low cost to be able to get away with it. I hate when any site adds default add'ons.
Jetstar and Woolies are on a par in my opinion just like the Waterhouse family (bookies).
They want every last zack.

Jetstar crew are also paid less than Qantas crew, even though Jetstar is owned and operated by Qantas.
I remember reading somewhere that Qantas cannot be sold owing to Government legislation.
Jetstar was created as a division of Qantas so that the Qantas brand could be shifted sideways to Jetstar without it being actually "sold". This then could be disposed of however they wanted.

Just be thankful RyanAir hasn't expanded here.....coin operated toilets and "standing seats"......FFS.

Hmm, they have taken my Indian and Chinese student rental property idea of cramming them into rooms with 4 level bunks like caged chickens for a low rent fee to a new level.
They forgot there is also room in the cargo area, extra cheap standing is available for those who can hold onto the landing gear too.
Correct....
Qantas (at this stage) must remain under a majority of Australian ownership, which means 51%, of which it is.
At one time, British Airways owned the remainder, but sold out years ago.
The ploy is to move as much of it's operation as possible offshore, crewing, maintenance, even catering and they are doing just that.
Sure QF remains 51% Australian owned, but most of the operating profit goes to foreign economies.
Totally agree with enf about RyanAir.... even our cruddiest cheap airlines don't come anywhere near them.... fortunately.
My mother died 2 weeks ago (the result of a stroke and very nasty fall) which necessitated a fast trip back to New Zealand.
I did a little Internet research but because we had flown Emirates in the past we decided to just ring them, explain the situation and see what they had.
What we got was AUD338.00 per person ($678 Return) thats with carry on luggage and a massive 30Kg baggage allowance and should I have needed to I could have changed flights / seats or food requirements without any extra cost.
We pre booked our seat allocation prior to leaving, did everything on line and it was a very easy transaction.
On the day of the flight, as we took our seats, a very attractive young stewardess approached us, greeted us using our names, presented us with a hot moist flannel to freshen up with and asked if we would like a drink before take off. As we were flying with our youngest grandson they also gave him, and every other child under the age of 12 that was on board a backpack which contained activity material to be used and consumed during the flight.
And before you ask - yes this was economy.
I checked more thoroughly on the Internet for cheaper prices than what I paid and yes there were a flew of the 'Jetstar' type scenarios around but when I look back on the quality I enjoyed I find myself asking;
Why would you fly anything else.

2 Adults + 3 kids Our flight was under 4 hours. The difference was in the order of $1000.
In Melbourne and travelling by public transport you can sometimes pay more to get to the airport than what the airfare is with the budget providers and then if you drive yourself and have to park your car then you can pay an airfare in carpark fees.
You don't get flash treatment on the train or shuttlebus as you are treated as a passenger not the customer. The budget airlines are much the same.
Tips that I've been given - If you travel in a big group - hire a limo
If you are parking the car for over a week and your from a regional area- consider a hire car to and from the airport.
