Default Australia... leading in the world

I have picked up a few snippets of news lately, leading me to think that WE must be the superior nation in the world, not USA or China,

but please correct me if i am wrong:

Australia has the highest earning banks
Australia has the most unaffordable housing (some ppl are now using their Super for financing)
Australia has the highest electricity prices
Australia has pretty much the most expensive broad band
Australia has the highest earning Government leadership
Australian average income is 73k (I am not aware of any country higher than that)
Australian dollar is the most popular 'safe haven' currency for investors

Are there any more superlatives I should know about? Please add to the list.

...but what I really need to know: any ideas when the bubble will burst?

I know for one thing that high wage demands (Unions) will eventually kill our economy but I also know nobody personally who actually earns the 'average' wage.
Well that's not quite true. I know a few teachers and council workers, but not that personally and they don't directly have influence on the economy.

To help verify the average wage I have added a poll. I am having difficulties believing the statistics.

Watch China's investments in Africa. When they come on-line, a lot of our resources money will divert to there.

Boomers will all retire, the rest will have to pay for them. Working population will go down - declining tax base will go with it.

I'd say the party will end in the next 10 to 15 years.
If a man says something in a forest and there is no woman there to hear it, will that which has been said still be wrong?

72k from the horses mouth, science teacher, semi rural NSW, public high school.

My son complains about too many subs lately. Maybe the casuals are lowering the average in the stats?

NBN TV news last week, about what the banks are earning again.

Interesting that the bank employees (teller) only get around 45k, according the NBN and my memory.
Normally not my choice of news but my wife had it on, at dinner

Interesting poll results up to now.

Surprising how many earn a lot less and a lot more than the average.
I have set an average in this poll at 63k (which was what I thought it was not so long ago) and wanted see if there is shift towards the 63-83k group. So far not.

Your looking at leading the world the wrong way.

We earn more yes however we pay the most for houses and taxes and everything in general (maybe not so much for fuel though).

Id say we have the least at the end of the week after paying for everything.

I am a member of this club, and it is near killing me trying to keep ahead. School fees and food alone are a huge burden, not to mention electricity bills that have risen logarithmically. It's got so hard my wife has to work on the weekends as a medic at sporting events, and I take the girls to netball etc. Tough times indeed.

Man im debt free, my kid now works and im still close broke at the end of the week!

Walked into the supermarket the other day, walked out with just 2 bags and $68 less in my pocket.

Somethings not quite right with this country, years ago wages were less, taxes were less, houses were less yet a family could afford to live comfortably, prices and taxes have risen but wages have not kept up at the same rate.

Tell me about it! I just got back from the shops and three bags of needed items cost me more than $100. I forgo all items for myself (have not bought an item of clothing in two years). I wish a kind benefactor would take this load off of me.

BTW I have just rewatched one of my favouite movies, Bob Roberts (very funny)

    See a taste

Im earning heaps less than I used to and am living a greater life than when I earned heaps more.
Get out of debt, reduce your overheads that can be reduced.power, water,food.entertainment,fuel.
I have to come up with $9000 a year that I cant reduce insurance, rego, rates etc everything else I can control and I do.
I only go shopping once every 3 months, it saves heaps of money.
When I go shopping its a car full for $1500.00 instead of $200/300 a week when I shopped weekly
Veggy garden and cooking lessons are the 2 best money saver you can do.

That could be only 5 years from exploration to running mine, especially if the efficient Chinese are behind it.

Boomers will retire at 70 but boomerang kids could drop the working population earlier.
Why work when you can life free with the oldies.
This could self correct the housing affordability though.

I know, that is reflected in some the superlatives I mentioned above.

OK, here's the way I see it ATM:

All our costs, bills, council rates, hidden taxes, fees and levies are calculated based on the “average wage”.
Therefore anybody who receives this 'average' wage and more (for what its worth: 50% right now in our poll) should not be suffering too bad.
And while there also 50% earning less, even when I was a kid, my parents were complaining (and fighting) about never having enough money.

We never had much left at the end of the week.

The average Joe has always been fighting to survive, barely able to pay the bills (I think that is part of the system we live in) but what might have changed is that there are more who earn significantly higher than the average, compared to lets say 30 years ago.

Problem is, this raises the “average wage” and from the view point of those who decide how much we have to pay for everything, it is now 73k (thanks NBN).
So there is still some headroom to raise bills.

Unions respond by demanding higher wages because there are some who earn less than 73k.
Companies go broke because they can't afford the wage increases but can't raise prices either because 50% (or possibly more) can't afford it.
    Economy goes bust.

For what it's worth, I too have a wife and three children and my income is significantly below average however I had planned ahead and learnt how to deal with it. I must admit Aldi is a lifesaver .
... and Veggie garden and a total DIY mentality are part of it.

However I might have to calculate my kids still living with us even when they are thirty, unless I can convince them to become lawyers or dentists.

Rubbish. Nothing, not even Milo can improve the taste of that 1% fat milk.
Back on topic, I thought I read a long time ago that average wages also included all the super you were going to receive at the end of your working life. That may bump up the figures a bit?
