MOST of the 380 people detained in immigration centres in Australia could be released into the community within a year under Rudd government plans to significantly water down the nation's hardline mandatory detention regime.
Under plans expected to be unveiled today by Immigration Minister Chris Evans, the mandatory detention policy will be maintained but eased, with a new emphasis on detaining only those who pose a risk to the community.
i think there is a lot more ppl asking the same question.
It's certainly a change from the Tampa race card that was pulled at a recent election

costs more than centrelink payments to keep them detained i think so there is a saving there. i don't believe they qualify for puplic housing as they are not australian citizens so unless they hold Temporary Protection Visas they don't qualify. i still think the navy should sink them on the way over or fly them out on the next available flight with no access to our judicial system.

Then where are they going to stay? they have to stay somewhere.
They shouldn't qualify for anything they are not Australians.
When the floodgates open it'll cost more than that to house, feed and give them medical care, oh and I almost forgot the legal costs so they can plead how hard done by they are in their own country.

Its interesting that so many have no identification papers at all , yet we are going to be nice enough to introduce them in to our community....seemingly on trust that they are just poor genuine refugees who seemingly forgot all their ID while fleeing.
Its also interesting that they are all predominantly young and male. Must have forgot to bring the family with them

Let them enter once their papers are in order and when they meet immigration requirements.
In 2007/2008 Australia gave aid of $3.155 billion to our neighbours and some countries that I wouldnt even call neighbours. No doubt 2008/2009 will be even higher. This amount ( source Government Ausaid website ) does NOT include amounts that other organisations have donated or that normal Australians individuals have donated such as with the Tsunami appeal etc. Can you imagine how much money that would amount to ? Australia has become the Salvation Army of the South Pacific and these amounts of money are big whilst our population is small.
As far as I am concerned , we are more than generous enough without having to take in people of dubious backgrounds who come here illegally blatantly and knowingly breaking our laws. Many deliberately have no identification as they are criminals or guerrilla fighters who are used to torturing and killing people. Mr Rudd has now given the green light to anyone that wants to come here. No need to do it the hard way with applications , character assessments and other criteria to those who immigrate here legally. Simply get your arse here anyway you can ( even catch a plane ) and you too can be released in to the general population with the governments blessing.
The amount of money flowing out of this country is more than enough to fulfill our international humanitarian obligations in my opinion and this lax attitude by Rudd is an open invitation to anyone and everyone to emigrate to the lucky country free of charge.
( I dont have to say " why did I vote for him ? " because I didnt.....Labor are predictable at ****ing the country and unfortunately I had previously voted for them all my life. )

I'll put off my retirement, and work an extra 5 years to pay taxes so they will live the lives they want/expect in Australia
Chances are that you wont have a job once you get older if we are flooded with illegal immigrants.
Im sure employers will be grabbing the ones that do want to work hard for next to nothing and letting go of the older westernised workers.

The people smugglers must be absolutely over the moon about this as will a lot of the legal profession who will run every conceivable defence to aid their clients via legal aid funding. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
The other little gem is if you have kids with you won’t be locked up. I wonder if we will now see lots more kids in the boats from now on.
