Default Kinda Debunks the big bang theory doesn't it?

APOD: 2008 March 28 - Across the Universe

This is a super nova 7.5 Billion light years away so the light has been travelling 7.5 billion years to get here and whatever exploded could be assumed dare I say to have been around for say 5 billion . So when was the big bang supposed to have happened and what else is out there?

APOD: 2008 March 30 - Weak Lensing Distorts the Universe

And this one is kinda interesting too as we recently discussed this lensing effect on here

... the universe is approx 14-15 billion years (don't ask me how they worked this out but that's what the going age is) old - so 7.5 billion years ago is well within the 'middle age' of the universe ...

... it all adds up ... for now at least

... big bang happened over 14 billion years ago (give or take a billion)

also too if it was only 5 billion years old and that supernova went in opposite direct of us that still gives it 1.25 billion years leeway
if we both started in the centre and travelled out 3.75 billion light years that would make a total of 7.5 billion light years away
at least I think it would lol

The big bang was something like 14 million years ago. Its determined by the left-over microwave radiatation that is detectable in space. I cant quite remember the physics of this but its do with the wavelength vs the size of the universe.

The supernova doesn't debunk it as supernova can actually happen fairly quickly to a star (1000s of years rather than mil or bil).

It is only specific types of Supernovae that are used for the measurement you're thinking of. Type 1A supernovae. They are created in a very specific process that ensures they are identical explosions and thus used as a benchmark.

The age of the universe is determined by how much it has cooled.
If you heat up a pot of water to boiling, then take it off and allow it to cool. If you know how fast it cools, you can determine when the pot was taken off the stove. That's one of the methods used to determine the age of the universe. There are others.

I am on holidays.... the brain just works a little slower than normal. Catching up on some reading on molecular biology and genetics.
