DSE Was selling the Tom Tom 3 Ver 2 for $ 199.00 special up till Monday this week. Why bother F**T A*****G around with this carp for $ 129.00. One would assume that your time repairing Tevions foibles would be of some value. Not all products from Aldi are crash hot.

Last issued map file (10 December) with roundabout sort of fixed.

This is the 213Mb map file only for 'Vista' users.

Copy to your SD card (Data\maps folder) or to your Vdisk folder if active sync works. Faster than the install software shown in the snap below.

Has anyone loaded TomTom 6 onto these units? I downloaded it from here

Basically I deleted Route 66 and copied TomTom and the maps onto the unit. I then renamed the TomTom exe file to MobileNavigator.exe. If i then try run it on the unit it shows the TomTom logo then gives the message "Navigator Failed to Start"

    Any ideas?

    Dan

Plenty have tried. None have succeeded to my knowledge. It'll run Destinator 6, old R66 and OziCE (but not 100%) and that's it! Next to useless.

OK, I'm just a beginner with these car navigator things, so, be gentle.

I couldn't get ActiveSynch to work, but I have downloaded the latest map onto an SD card, moved that onto the GPS thing, and set it as the default map.

This seems to work fine, but, is there any way, without using ActiveSynch, for me to delete the old map, and copy the new map onto the device itself?

Also, as a complete different thing, I would like to get a map of NZ, since I'm planning a weeks holiday there.

Is there a cheaper alternative than the 50 euros that Route66 want?
After all, 50 euros is more than the cost of the device!

    regards,CrazyCam

I don't see why other software shouldn't work. You can pretty much edit or replace any file you want on these units. Maybe it's just missing some files.

I've hit a bit of a snag actually.

I've mananged to get TomTom running ok on it though I can't put the GPS settings in. When I go to select the type of gps etc it doesn't give me the option of COM4 which is what this GPS seems to run goin by the Route 66 config file. It gives me a few other options COM2 COM5 etc but no COM4.

Anyone got any idea from their experience with cheap gps's

Should work nicely once this is solved I have explorer desktop loading by default with the differant GPS software icons on the desktop.

Nice. Try using Mio 3.3 for instance to check the actual GPS port No. I don't think it was port 4. I have a faint memory that it was port 8.

Alright I got TomTom working kind of....

Basically it works now although if you try to navigate somewhere i.e to an address it exits the program. Basically it can map where your travelling ok though. It might just be a bug in this downloaded TomTom i have.

I will post up a bit more detail later although so far all I have done is edit the gps.txt file in the root of the internal memory so that it starts explorer when you choose the GPS option. Basically you just edit the path to \Windows\explorer.exe

After this you can do whatever you want within windows. For my experimenting I have been transfering the TomTom software onto my SD card and inserting it. Then running the program from there. It's heaps quicker than activesyncing the data onto the internal memory. Eventually when im happy with a particular software I will load it on the internal memory.

As it isn't an official Windows Mobile version the TomTom installers won't work. Basically you have to extract it manualy and copy the files to the correct paths. Theres some detail on how to do this in the thread below. Basically you have to read through the extracted _setup.xml and find where all the files have to go. You have to rename the files to their correct names once these are extracted.

There is also a problem with the TomTom software that it looks for the maps in the My Documents shell folder. I don't know if there is a patch for this but I addressed it the same way as they have in the above thread by editing the registry to make the My Documents folder my SD card.

As these run Windows CE 6 I don't think you can use the typical regeditors that I found in other threads. I found a program where you can edit the registry remote from your computer when connected with Active Sync. It's called CeRegistryEditor by mdSoft. You should be able to find this on google.

You can find pretty much any TomTom version at the link below. You just have to extract it as I explained above. The latest version 6's don't seem to execute on this unit for some reason. The best version I have working so far is 6.020 although i'm still playing.

The Australian maps you can find in other threads on here. I'll post a bit of a better tutorial soon hopefully when I get time and when the results improve a bit. This should keep you guys busy for the moment.

Oh P.S When you get TomTom running with these versions you need to reset factory defaults in the program if it doesn't ask you for GPS settings. Then you select Other NEMEA GPS and COM6 9600 Baud.

    Default PWM-3501 Map Updates

Got a Aldi Tevion PWM-3501 GPS from Santa, (99$ special), and would like to update the maps, (current map on GPS is Australia 2008 Q3).

I am a beginner with these car navigator GPS units, so, be gentle please.

Attempted to follow process posted at start of this thread:--

    2. After Microsoft Activesync is installed on your computer, you are ready to install the ROUTE 66 Map Updater.
Go to and save the “map_updater.exe” file to your desktop.
I have Microsoft Activesync installed and running, but can't find the file "map_updater.exe" at the above address or any other.

Can someone please direct to this file or if there is a newer one please?

    It's now "map_updater.exe1"

or use the method at post #23. It's a faster way of installing the map

    Default Some progress

Thanks Farmsky, got the file OK "map_updater.exe1"

Post #23 said this map file is only for 'Vista' users, I have XP.
    Is this so?

Using the longer method I now appear to have the same problem as Brutrac had:---

I've followed the instructions as to how to upgrade the map and I get to the point where Active Sync says "Guest connected", Route 66 seems to be going ahead OK and then says "Storage medium not found.Connect to USB port" Retry results in the same problem. I've retried numerous times tried a different port etc. Doesn't work. Anyone solved a similar problem or got any ideas,
Brutrac/anyone did you get a fix?
