    Talking ROUTE66 for Windows Mobile and CE4.2 & CE5.0 with Australia 2009 Q1 Map - TUTORIAL

If there are any mistakes, please PM me to let me know so that I can fix them.
Please notify me of dead links as well, I'll do my best to fix it.

for most of you, it will work the first time, however some of you will have problems,
some minor and some major. All devices are different and you will get many different types
of errors. I can't list all the issues here but I want to ask people to help each other out
and support each other if someone asks for help. I'll do my best as well.

If there are newer versions of what I uploaded here, please let me know, please dont just say
there is a newer one, please supply the link or upload it yourself. Thanks

    THINGS TO KNOW:
    ------------------------------------------------------

    1) English voices only
    2) Australia map only
    3) If you get errors or trouble starting the application ask here for help or Google it, because google is your friend.
    4) None of my archives have passwords - I share, not keep secrets.
    5) Don't extract directly to the memory card, files tend to get corrupt that way !
    6) If anyone has a good navkey.dat for Australia that unlocks everything, could you please upload it.

WHAT DEVICE DOES THIS WORK ON?
    ------------------------------------------------------

    1) Any Windows Mobile 5.0 or 6.5 devices
    2) Works on my Chinese In-Car DVD/GPS system that runs a CE5.0 core
    3) Confirmed working on my HTC TyTN II Mobile, HTC Touch Pro 2 Phone and mio168 running windows mobile 2003 with CE 4.2 core)
    4) Some PNA devices have trouble keeping settings - A mate of mine has a chinese GPS PNA, the application works, but wont keep settings on exit. I figured out that you need to put the 3DNavigator.ini in the root of the memory card, and it seems to work then. I think you only put that file when using it on a CE4.2 device.

    WHAT TO DOWNLOAD:
    ------------------------------------------------------

    1) REQUIRED - Mobile 8 WM 8.0.6126 (18557)
    2) REQUIRED - of Australia NAVTEQ2009Q1
    3) OPTIONAL & REQUIRED - , needed for CE4.2 devices - put this file in the root of your SD Card

    PREPERATION:
    ------------------------------------------------------

    1) OPTIONAL - Back up any previous versions of Route66 data that you may have (eg: poi's, maps, speed cams, voices etc).
    2) OPTIONAL - Uninstall/Delete any previous PolNav versions/directories.
    3) If your CE device / PNA / PDA / PPC uses a SD card for the maps and software, then you'll need a SD card reader for your computer or laptop or you can plug your device in via the USB to transfer data that way, depending on your device.
    3) REQUIRED - Have installed.

    INSTALLATION:
    ------------------------------------------------------

    1) Extract [COPY FOLDERS TO SD CARD.rar] to a temp folder of your hard drive.
    2) Copy the [Data] and [ROUTE66] folder to the root of your SD memory card (DONT COPY THE [COPY FOLDERS TO SD CARD] folder to the root, only the 2 folders inside it!)

    3) Extract [Australia 2009 Q1.rar] to a temp folder of your hard drive.
    4) Copy the [Australia 2009 Q1.map] file to [MEMORY CARD\Data] folder of your device (folder that you copied in step 2).

    5) Copy navkeys.dat to your [MEMORY CARD\DATA\RES] folder - this file will unlock your map.

    6) Go to file explorer (or equivalent) of your device and go to [ROUTE66] folder that you copied over in step 2, now start ROUTE66 with R66 M8.exe
    7) Enjoy !
    8) Haa, you can't Enjoy just yet, you have to set up your GPS port and baud settings as Route66 does not have options within the application to set this up, so you have to open device.ini and change it in there. Read on to the next part.

SETUP YOUR GPS PORT AND BAUD RATE:
    ------------------------------------------------------

    1) Go to [ROUTE66] folder and you will see a file named device.ini, open this in notepad.
    2) Edit/change the red highlighted settings according to your device (There may be a device.ini in the root of your SD after launching it, if you still have trouble with GPS connection, you will need to edit the device.ini in the root of your SD Card as well)

    Default route 66 problems

thank you very much, hollowman! yours is the only reference i managed to google regarding route 66 and gps. i have htc tytn with bluetooth gps and for the last two days i've been trying to get it to work. somehow it worked yesterday for 5 minutes and i haven't managed to get the programme to talk to the gps ever since. my device.ini file exists only on the sd card and is slightly different than yours. my gps is set up on com0 and i am not using the intermediate driver. i wonder whether you could give me a few pointers on setting up the gps and what to change in the device.ini file. allegedly all i have to do is tell the route 66 to use com0 but i'm not sure which entries in the file i need to change. i'm attaching my original device.ini file.

    thanks again

jeeper, i don't mean to sound rude, however, there is no other way that i can explain it, your answer is in my first post and its as clear as i can get. your device ini is a little different but that doesn't matter.... my first post also states that you may have 2 device.ini's

if you still can't get it working, copy and paste my settings in your device ini and change your com and baud settings that's highlighted in red (remembering to backup first)

    Basically all you need to do is change the numbers every time you see this;

    Com Port Value=1
    Baud rate Value=38400

.. if you said your com port is "0", then change EVERY Com Port Value to 0 and your baud rate (what ever your baud rate is)

    Default route 66 problems continued

i know i sound confusing, i changed all com entries to com0, and the thing wouldn't work. i used your file with changed entries and the application wouldn't start. regardless of com entries, the application seems to talk to the gps receiver for about 4 seconds and it stops. i am confused because it worked once for about 3 minutes, i was in the garden holding the gps and the phone and it got a lock, but didn't happen again. it seems to be a very good gps receiver (bluenext BN-901S), when i connect to it via computer to test it, it gets a lock on at least 5 satellites quickly while being stuck to the window.

i phoned route66 support and the guy told me to download the latest version and try again. the website also states that the application is compatible with htc tytn (which doesn't have internal gps). i'm going to reinstall, try again and i'll post the results.

we shouldn't have to spend so much time trying to get something this simple to work...

do you have a htc tytn or tytn II ? coz im using it on my tytn II, mio168, CE4.2 and CE5.0

do you think there may be something wrong with the bluetooth gps or the bluetooth on your phone ??? if it starts picking up satellites, then drops out, then i think its a hardware issue....

don't bother ringing those morons, they wont help you, its not worth the cost of the phone call... i bet you spoke to someone in India ?

after a few hours of torturing the phone and myself, the best i got was about 15 seconds of stable communication between the application and the gps receiver. and that was after changing all the entries in the device.inf file to a com port of my choice (apart from the entries referring to rds tmc) and using the intermediate driver set for that port. it seems that the gps receiver is not 100% compatible with route 66.

the phone is htc tytn and the receiver is BlueNEXT BN-901S. when i hook up a bluetooth dongle to the pc and pair it with the gps, i use the GPS View application (from their website). it links to the receiver straight away and locks on 6 satellites within 45 seconds each time from cold. the receiver is impressively good and quick. i blame my problems on route 66, which doesn't have a possibility from within the application to set the com port and baud rate of an external receiver. i will try to work route 66 on an htc tytn ii possibly tomorrow and see what happens...

the support i phoned was on a local number, so no extra costs there. the people i spoke to sounded more eastern european than indian. they were right, the upgrade had to be installed on a formatted card, but they didn't warn me the upgrade didn't include the maps, which i copied back from the old install, together with a couple of other files that were missing as well.

modern technology! never works the way we want...

    jeeper, try this
im assuming your using windows mobile 6 ?

1 go to START > SETTINGS >> PERSONAL TAB >> EXTERNAL GPS >> HARDWARE TAB

this is what it should look like (or similar)

Try changing the com port to 9 for example.

I'm using a bluetooth GSP on my Dopod 838 Pro with R66 and it works....

Default route 66 solved by shopping

it is conclusive that the first gps receiver i have doesn't work with the application. i got another receiver bundled in a route 66 box i got from ebay (Royaltek RBT1000) and it worked straight away, locked on within 20 seconds. then the phone started dropping bluetooth connection to the receiver after 4 minutes. i pair it again and it drops after 4 minutes. so no luck there. the phone has windows mobile 5 and i blame microsoft. my computers run linux so i don't care!

the solution presented itself in the shape of htc tytn ii, which i bought, installed route 66 and had a fully working navigating phone. it's been raining here in london so i haven't tested it on the road, only on the window, but i'm quietly confident and hopeful.

this whole business was prompted by nokia 6110 navigator which i got (ebay) and it worked for me for a couple of months, until something went bonkers and it wouldn't charge. i wanted a phone which i would use for navigation on the scooter, and ,while it worked, having nokia in my pocket telling me where to go was just brilliant. that's how i became obsessed, so hopefully the new htc will do the job when i need it. i use tom tom in the car, but couldn't see myself on the scooter with tom tom strapped to the helmet...

on a brighter note, route 66 support for united kingdom actually comes from poland. the few guys i spoke to were polite and helpful. they resolved the licence part for me, but i do hope i won't have to ring them again.

i am very grateful, hollowman, your advice is spot on. people should beware of incompatible/dodgy hardware, though...
