Just came across this hidden menu *#*#4636#*#* I don't know if it works on all Huawei or not. But has some good info in it.
The Mrs's has the X1 u8180 and it has heeps of optus crap on it that you can't uninstall unless its rooted. Anyone know if this will work on that one?

Just bought a Sonic from Dick Smith for $188.00 unlocked.
Ran your root method which worked flawlessly!!!
Installed "Bloat Freezer" app & got rid of "Documents To Go" app which clawed back a huge 10mb of precious internal storage. Lets face it, this phone has only a very modest amount of space available and every bit saved helps.
This phone has very little bloat but getting rid of that one huge useless app was sooooooo satisfying
Now that I have root what other devilment can I get up to?
I was one of the many suckers who bought a Samsung Galaxy S for an insane amount of money based on its dazzling hardware specs only to find it was a ridiculously sluggish and buggy waste of money. Trying to get it rooted was the most frustrating and ultimately unsucessful thing I have ever had the misfortune to try.
Huge thanks for sharing this!
Gonna have great fun plying with this little Sonic

Good to see a few people have used the method I postedThere is nothing worse than Googling and trawling a heap of sites that supposedly have the answer, only to find pages full of ads and popups and getting no where.

Just a follow up..
I have a U8150 Ideos (Virgin Mobile carrier unlocked) laying around and tried this updater. It worked flawlessly also.
A previous poster reported success with a U8160 (X1) and I have confirmed it worked perfectly on my U8650 (Sonic).
Caveat Emptor:
Just to clarify to anyone arriving at these pages from other countries, these are all AUSTRALIAN market firmware phones. Your mileage may vary if you have a handset from another country.

sorry for my last post i didnt see the link as i was not yeat a member now that i am i can see the like fine thanks heaps for the help
the only question do i nee to save the file on the sd card into a folder or just anywhere on the sd card
I've also been looking to free up some space on my HTC desire because the low memory icon has come up even though I dont have a great deal of apps on there. My biggest app is 'touchdown' which is my email program. For some reason, the option to move it to SD Card is greyed out but other apps can be moved to SD Card.
Has anybody succesfully and easily rooted a HTC desire?
Thanks
Start a new thread please, I would like to keep this one on (sonic) topic.
I am sure someone can help you out.
Consider it done.
Thanks

I've been looking for a rooting solution since I got the u8650 last week. It was looking like I wa going to have wait a while till I could root this sucker.
Stumbled on this thread, signed up to the site, tried the method posted here and bingo. Rooted u8650!
Now to get the butt wipe carrier to un-lock the danm thing and I take it traveling with me. Thanks again for the info.
