Thanks for the clarification roguefan99, Sanity.

I have download the "updates.zip" many times (and from different hosts) in order to ensure that the .zip is not corrupted. Obviously, european Sonics (as banger101 said), should be first flashed with the original rom before any attempt to root them.

Personally I'm not going to do it because I don't want to risk my phone's reliability, although I would really like to root it in order to unistall the CarrierIQ software.

Umm what? CarrierIQ isn't installed into any phones outside the US is it? I would be shocked if it had CarrierIQ on it. Then again I really don't see the big deal with CarrierIQ because its everything the Carriers could see anyway.

You can check using this app
Coding in C is like sending a 3 year old to do groceries. You gotta tell them exactly what you want or you'll end up with a cupboard full of pop tarts and pancake mix.

    Can anyone help me?
I don't appear to have a Recovery Menu. I hold the volume up button and press the power button, it just gives me a brief flash. If I hold the power button the phone just turns on and if I hold both volume buttons and click power it starts doing firmware update.
I live in Europe (Estonia to be exact) if that helps even slightly.

My phone is european and Voodoo CarrierIQ Detector reports that:
CarrierIQ elements found, however it seems inactive

    Unhappy

Hi, i downloaded that folder, put it on my sd card.
Then i turned on my phone, holding volume button and power button and i successfully entered that selection screen.
Then i search for that update folder and open it, i can open sub folders etc, but i cant activate anything, its just empty folders.
I certainly did something wrong, but what?

    Default Megaupload

Given that MegaUpload was taken down, does anyone have an alternate download link?

    Cheers Koolio

My wifes phone packed up so I gave her mine and bought another. It still seems to be the best bang for buck phone out there at the moment.

Stolen from another link, reasons to root your phone

I have sucessfully done this on my own phone, however do it at your own risk

    1. Dowload this file

    2. Transfer it on to your SD Card - dont unzip it

    3. Turn your phone off. When turning it back on, hold the volume up botton and power button together for a few seconds. This will boot it in to recovery mode. You will see this on the screen, if it didnt happen, turn your phone off, remove the battery, replace it, and do it again.

    4. In the menu, select update from SD card. I had to use my volume buttons for selection and power button to select it on the screen.

    5. Follow the progress on the screen. Reboot your phone and its done.
The file didnt work on my phone, i took the battery out and put in the sd card with update.zip in it then put the battery back in and switched it on holding the power button + vol up. the system recovery came up and i clicked 'apply sdcard:update.zip'.
    It failed and said:
    E: failed to verify whole
    -file signiture
    E:signiture verication failed
    Installation aborted

I don't know what to do!!!
    please help!!!

If your the phone is rooted and have the clockwork mod (CWM) on it,

All you have to do to install a new rom (CM7) is

Copy the new Rom zip file to your SD card, I make a folder called ROM Files and put it in there.

Then turn the phone off, then restart it while holding the "power button" & "Up Volume buttons" should boot into (CWM) menu

Go to "Backup and restore" then "backup" this will take a few mins.

Then Select "Install zip from sdcard"

Then "Choose zip from sdcard" go to your rom Folder and pick the ROM Zip file (CM7) you want to install.

Once its finished installing go back to the main menu in CWM and select "Advanced"

then select "Wipe dalvik cache" and then yes

Once done go back to main menu and reboot device.

the first time you boot into the new rom (CM7) it will take a while.
