Default Help ! Iphone 3GS stuck on Apple Logo

I could not help myself... After getting my 3GS iphone jail broken I was doing quite well with playing around with some apps while travelling... I just had to load up another app and somehow I now have a bricked up 3GS stuck on an apple logo.

Holding down the hold and power buttons for 10 seconds gets the power off but it still goes back to an apple symbol with a spinning circle with a black screen flash about every 10 minutes.

As I mentioned I am travelling abroad and with the family ... for the once the missus has been right but not letting me touch her iphone (a 4GS) or her ipad. My daughter has an MAC Book air with her so tis may be useful ... if I can work out what the best option here is.

All my contacts are in the phone, not to mention those useful apps like Europe TomTom which has saved my life driving around Europe.

I am still Googling but like always fellow members in this forum have been very useful with reliable advice ... hopefully someone will have seen this and have useful feedback to help me here

Any and all advice will be much appreciated

tried TinyUmbrella? I think there's an option in that to kick it out of the mode you're stuck in

is it still recognised in iTunes, maybe just update it if it is, no jailbreak but you should at least be able to get it working

Just boot it from red snow.
    It's in the extras
What you need to do is right before putting it in dfu mode hold down the 2 buttons so it reboots then hit next and then proceed to put in dfu mode.
Should work but timing is essential.

I would love to do a restore from a backup from another computer that I am not using at the moment. Are there backup files I could "pull" from that computer that I could stick into itunes on another computer ?

Just tried redsnow ... getting nowhere

I found that I managed to get it into DFU mode and when I went back to itunes to do a restore I got the following message

"This iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored - This device is not eligible for the requested build"

    Buggar

I will keep trying some other ideas... what a pain

    Additional note
Could not not do a tethered boot either... Problem seems to be that I need a suitable or matching IPSW file ?? Tried a couple already but I am thinking this is simply a guess on the version/ type required

Just tried this .... No luck

From memory I think the IOS was 4.0.2 ... Should the above still work if this is the case?

Ok some clarifying questions that are bugging me and I suspect are some of my problems:

    1. Firmware and IOS are the same thing? .....How does one find out what IOS is on your iPhone... in particular if the iPhone is locked to the apple logo all the time (yes when the iPhone is working you can simply read this from it)

    2. What is meant by "baseband" on an iPhone?

    3. "IPSW" files is what the iPhone uses wrt to an "IOS" version ?

    4. Jail breaking software e.g. Redsnow use "IPSW" files ....are these are also common across different jail breaking software types e.g. Redsnow, black rain etc ?

    5. What is the relationship btwn Baseband and IOS on an iPhone device?

For the moment I have given up trying to fix my iPhone ... Especially as I am travelling for a few weeks yet and can not get access to good computer equipment and Internet connections until I get back

I need to do some more thinking before I attack this again

if you've been jailbroken previously there is an entry in your hosts file which prevents your phone updating to stock firmware, you need to remove that entry before the stock firmware can be validated

I have since done an update on the iTunes version and am now getting past the previous "this device is not eligible for the requested build" message

The instructions on this link does also show that the hosts file is good as well.

The download though seems to want to take a long time (like 3 hrs) ... Something must be still be wrong. The Internet service here is not that bad...

download will be around 600mb from memory, click the downloads tab in iTunes and you see the exact size, transfer rate etc

1: you need to edit your etc/hosts:

    1) Start -> Run -> C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc
    2) Right click "hosts" and click "Open" when the Open With box appears, select Notepad
    3) Comment out 74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com if it exists by putting a # in front so it looks like:
    #74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com
    4) Add this to a new line at the bottom: 127.0.0.1 gs.apple.com
    5) Save the file

can download which ever firmware you want from here

Download the 5.0.1 firmware from the above link, put on desktop
Put phone into DFU mode - hold both power and home button for 10 seconds, let power button go and continue to hold home for another 10 seconds then let go
Plug phone into usb, iTunes should open and tell you it has detected the phone and it needs to be restored. Select RESTORE while holding down the SHIFT key(for windows) or the Option key (for Mac) and you should get a window which allows you to select the firmware from the desktop - Restore.
When done you can use redsnow beta 3 to jailbreak or pwnage tool if on a Mac

Good luck it does all work but sometimes it falls over and you have to have another try

    Success

I have managed to download 5.01 IOS as a separate file and then individually load this via iTunes - yes I have lost what I had on the iPhone previously but at least it is not a useless brick anymore

A very big thank you to every one who posted details of advice on how to fix.

On another note I would like to consider jail breaking the phone again .... Is this adviseable for 5.01?

(Note - Given I have been able to restore from absolute rock bottom today I can always do the full restore again if I need to!)

think I'd rather be enjoying that overseas holiday than going through all that again

when you did your last update before the crash it would have done a backup of what was on there so you should be able to reload the apps - contacts - photo's etc once again
