Just wondering what recommendations members have here about using a mobile phone service when travelling through the USA.
Currently I have Live Connected (reuses Optus Network) which have hefty fees for sending an SMS $1 plus per SMS ... the call rates are also really horribly expensive

Buying a cheap sim card when you get there would probably be your cheapest option.
I already have a woolworths global sim - I have worked out that this is at least something I can start with as soon as I get there. At least SMS's are only 19c. Also I figure there may be access to wifi or internet readily so in which case Skype oudial would be also very economical
I noticed woolworths the other day and spotted Coles as well. Here is a few (at your risk) :
I just buy a local sim for phone/SMS/Internet. I have a t-mobile on at the moment and if you go into another euro county it global roams automatically. Internet has small downloads and gets used up quickly but then speed is throttled. It's still very usable though! I sms the people that need my number. I use Skype for cheap international calls if I can and free wifi if I need it.

I purchased a SIM card inside the departure lounge at Melbourne airport from this company.
They simply pop the SIM card in your phone and they activate it whilst you are on the plane travelling to the US. When you get there, the phone is operational. They use T-Mobile which is not the best network but it work well for me.
Check it out!
