Default What Is Next G exactly and how do I determine compatability?

My son wishes to buy a Nokia N95-4 phone. We have found some overseas -USA- versions at competitive prices. How do we tell if they are compatable with Next G? So many different anagrams and frequencies.
We have also spotted N96 phones Nokia | Tech Specs and would like to know if this is Next G compatable.
Thanks in advance regards Craig

Generally, if it says UMTS 850 MHz or HSDPA 850 MHz then it will work on Next G. GSM/GPRS 850 MHz is not Next G.

What Urban said.

Next G is UMTS also know as (W-CDMA).

Band I (W-CDMA 2100) in Europe, Africa, Asia, Oceania (ITU Region 1) and Brazil (part of ITU Region 2)

Band II (W-CDMA 1900) in North America and South America (ITU Region 2)

Band IV (W-CDMA 1700 or Advanced Wireless Services) in the United States (T-Mobile USA)

Band V (W-CDMA 850) in Australia, Canada, the USA, parts of South America, parts of Asia (ITU Region 2 and ITU Region 3)

Band VIII (W-CDMA 900) in Europe, Asia, Oceania (ITU Region 1 and ITU Region 3), Australia

Band XII - XIV were added for future use in the 700MHz spectrum auctioned in the United States and Canada in early 2008

As long as the phone from the US is compatible with one of the Australian bands you should be sweet.

I think 3G operates on Band V (W-CDMA 850)

Next G runs on Band I (W-CDMA 2100) operating in the 2110-2200 MHz band for downlink and 1885-2025 MHz band for uplink. The two up and down bands are often referred as 2100 / 1900 or simply 2100.
