WTF is going on

Hi All,

A friend of mine has a problem which I cannot fix.

He has an Optus cable modem going to his pc. He wanted to put a dreambox onto his network so he went out and bought a network switch but only one thing works at a time ie only pc or only dreambox. Not only that switch aside it generally takes 10 minutes for the dreambox to pick up an ip address even when it is connected directrly to the modem. The pc takes about 2 minutes and you have to repair the ethernet connection a few times.

I have tried new cables, pcs and dreambox so I am assuming it might be a faulty modem or is there something I have missed

set a fixed ip on each unit

eg

modem = 192.168.1.254
subnet = 255.255.255.0
default gateway = 192.168.1.254
preferred dns =192.168.1.254

pc = 192.168.1.1
subnet = 255.255.255.0
default gateway = 192.168.1.254
preferred dns =192.168.1.254

dream = 192.168.1.2
subnet = 255.255.255.0
default gateway = 192.168.1.254
preferred dns =192.168.1.254

the modem should have a dns server and if you set fixed ips should work

Router is needed - the best solution. Get rid of the switch unless you want to play with network configuration.

You will not need to buy a new router, the switch will be fine.
Fandtm666's suggestion should fix it otherwise it could be some hardware.
Check cables/connectors?

Was the computer connected to the pc over eth. before hand ?

you dont need a router, the modem has inbuilt dns server and could be set to assign just one ip but if you manually set your static ip's on anything you want to use then it works just fine.

I personally manually set static ips on everything i have from laptops/pc's/dreams/bf340's i find it much better because if you are using things that need port forwarding at least you know that the ip will always remain the same should the pc be turned of or modem rebooted etc.

the only thing you must be careful of is to log into the modem and get the correct details or go to control panel/network connections double click the lan connection then get the details from there . the subnet-gateway-preferred dns must be the same in all just the inital ip will be different.

If your friend bought a slightly better grade (read "more expensive") switch, then it may have 802.1D running, make sure to specify the ports that connect to the PC and Dreambox as "Edge" ports.

The reason only one unit is operating is that the cable modem is configured to allow only 1 mac address at a time. This means you need to reboot the cable modem to reassign the mac address.
Your best bet is to put a router in to allow the cable modem to connect to the WAN side and then confiure your LAN side for ports etc.
