Default Need a faster network setup

I have 2 desktop and 1 laptop computers networked to a TP-Link
TD-W8920G 4 port modem/router also a network printer and a 1TB Lacie network drive

This all works fine but it takes about 1 hour to transfer a 10Gb file from a desktop to the Lacie , can I expect better if I install an 8 port Gigabit switch between the modem/router and hook everything up to the Gigabit switch

Both desktop have a gigabit network card , only the laptop has a 10/100 network connection
So I don’t expect a faster file transfer to/from the laptop to the Lacie and the internet speed 1500/128 I don’t expect an improvement

I just want to improve the file transfer speed from/to desktop and the 1Tb network Lacie which has a gigabit network connection

I don't know what cables are used as they are not marked so may have to go to Cat 6 from desktop to switch is about 10M

if the laice is a 10/100/1000 then yes it will increase the throughput by installing a gigabit switch.

My experience is that these NAS devices have poor performance over ethernet.

Only with CAT6 cabling. CAT 5 cabling is only capable of 10/100 speeds as far as i understand networks.
Thus all parts of the network, be it ethernet cables, switches, RJ sockets etc all must be gigabit capable otherwise there is no improvement.

Cat5e will do GiGE...

all machines/ devices would need to have GigE Nics for an upgrade to be usefull.

most off the shelfs NAS's are next to usless for all but single drives

CAT5 enhanced ("CAT5e" or "CAT 5e") - supports networking at Gigabit Ethernet[ speeds (up to 1000 Mbps) over short distances by utilizing all four wire pairs, and it is backward-compatible with ordinary CAT5.

what is in Bold is wrong... Cat5e will do GiGE up to 100m total length.

that is 90m "horizontal" cabling an 5m each end for patch leads.

it is only compatible with Cat5 for 100mb/s only
