Default What can a Dreambox (DM500) do?

Quote:
Leroy, if you have time would you be able to basically elaborate to me what Dreambox 500 does. How does it connect to the PC (usb or network) I am not familiar
with Linux. I can probably get a cheap one in Bangkok next month. I have 3M mesh with 2 Strong 4658X's
Any advice you could give would be very much appreciated. Your answers on this forum are very
helpful. thanks, xxxxx

Hi xxxxx, You should post your question in the forum in the Newbie section as I'm sure others would be interested to know also. You don't need to be a linux guru. You need very little knowledge of linux in fact. A bit of networking knowledge doesn't go astray as it connects to a network via it's ethernet port. Or you could connect it directly to your pc with a network cable called crossover cable. You just need to be able to connect to your box via a FTP client to edit files. I use the FireFTP pluggin with the Mozilla Firefox browser.
A DM500 does lots of things. You can use it as a normal FTA receiver, buy a subscription to a PayTV provider like Select TV for example. You can set up a share on your PC and record and playback programs like a PVR. You can stream movie files to it from a pc so you can watch them on your TV. You can also stream from the DM500 to your PC to watch things that can't be viewed by your DM500 (or with a regular STB) like high definition channels or feeds in the 4.2.2 format. I think it's primary use is for card sharing! That another whole topic in itself!! I'm not in the habbit of posting PM's but I thought other's may be interested. I hope you don't mind.

Leroy

People should ask on the forum and not via PM. For one , members shouldnt be put in the position that they feel obliged to give personal tuition. For two , personal replies dont help anyone but one person and thats not what forums are about.

So good on you for posting it up Leroy

He has rocks in his head if he goes and buys a " cheap " one in Bangkok when he could purchase one from Fernbay or any of the other reputable sellers here.

You wouldn't believe the number of 'tyre kickers' I get via PM who can't be bothered reading the bloody obvious

Can I also add - YES!!! THEY ARE BLOODY CLONES!!!

If you really, really want an 'original' (probably made on the same production line) then go speak to someone else & pay them three times as much

Some people probably feel a little intimidated and don't want to be shot down. I usually try to suggest people post as it helps others and I'll reply there otherwise it's somethimes a lot of 'hunt and peck' typing for a one person.

Leroy , I honestly dont think I have ever seen anyone shot down for posting in the Newbie forum. I dont think anyone would have a problem with questions such as the ones he has asked you. I personally wont give private tuition to anyone as I could be helping a lot more people by posting on here. Unless they want to pay me that is

Fernbay , yes , people need to realise that the DM500 went out of production years ago and that all these receivers currently on the market are clones. But there are good clones and bad clones and there is no point buying one purely on price. When purchasing people need to know if they are from a reputable source.
