trying to find toside.sys ...

Hi all

Hopefully someone can help me. I need a copy of toside.sys, an XP driver (c:\windows\system32\drivers\toside.sys) for a Dell laptop. I haven't been able to find a copy anywhere on the net, so I'm hoping austech can help (either finding a link for me or ...)

umm, I assume you already did the google search, I came up with heeps of responses for that driver, maybe they are not what your after.

Yep, did a google but the ONLY link I could find for an actual download required the download of some other software (the one you have given) and I am VERY cautious of any requirement to download an exe.

Am I being paranoid? Have you used this "DriverAgent" site before?

Should be able to get it off the XP CD ... but it's not on there - at least not as a single file. Did a search on the disk some time ago (on a working system).

And, when I try to do an Install repair, Windows Installer on the CD isn't recognising that there is already a Windows installation on the HD to repair. It is only giving me the option to Install ... not a good move if I want to keep my settings and data.

Oh, and the link is to tosdvd.sys, not toside.sys, unfortunately.

Maybe you still have a RAM problem... have you tested it using memtest86?

Says:

The “toside.sys” error only appears if you try to boot from the WinXP installation CD as a way to correct the problem. WinXP won’t boot normally or from a CD if a RAM module is corrupted.

I have run the full Dell diagnostics over both memory and HDD. Memory passed all tests but the HDD showed one bad block. My assumption is that the bad block involves a Windows driver (hence the BSOD), probably toside.sys as this is involved with the particular BSOD error message that I'm receiving.

I'll give the memtest86 a go, but I cannot get Windows running at all on the system - only the Recovery Console or Windows Install.

memtest86 can be set up to run off a boot cd.

Also if you have an old ubuntu live CD it comes with memtest86 or Hiren's boot CD.

Doing a google search for your problem shows all the same characteristics... played with RAM, that error message. But there have been some who thought they had a failed HD, but Microsoft particularly say that file toside.sys will indicate as corrupt. "STOP 0x00000074 BAD_SYSTEM_CONFIG_INFO" Error Message When You Start Your Computer

It may be that the HD is OK but the RAM problems make it look like it is failed.

The other option is to stick the HD into your desktop and see what is happening.

Thanks ssrattus. Looks like I'm going to have to get a laptop to ide converter and check out the HD that way ... and probably find a HD to test run the laptop with as well. Bugger!

Thanks everyone for advice/help. Turns out it is almost certainly a dodgy HDD. Had a Dell tech around for another machine (this one's out of warranty) and while he was waiting he talked me through the testing required and it got narrowed down to one dead block in the Windows area of the HD. Couldn't get any repair functions to work, so I guess that I'm just going to have to replace and rebuild. Fortunately I was able to get all the data off the HD.

Keep up the great work helping us tyros.
