I know this isn't a "which OS do you prefer" thread, so perhaps this is a little off topic......it seems to me though that everytime I upgrade my hardware thinking things will run faster and smoother, I also "upgrade" the OS to a more resource hungry variant. I feel that I always negate the hardware upgrade with the OS chewing up any advances I would normally have gained. I am about 5secs away from going back to XP, the only thing stopping me is I don't have a full Vista disc if I change my mind in the future.

The point that I made earlier re vista I think its just a pain for most new users that just want a straight forward operating system.

I’ve read thru a lot of forums where users had to spend money in upgrading there system to make vista run faster after coming from XP.

For me I spent hours just trying to get vista to see my external drive.
New users that can’t get printers or scanners recognized. Not so bad when one has a good knowledge of an operating system but what about the novice home user having to pay at the PC store just to get an item to work.

Even though I have every version of vista here to use I still end up having a dual boot and prefer the XP

Now think about this then
With XP that’s been running for years then vista comes out and hasn’t been out that long here we now start seeing VER 7 getting ready for use.doesn’t that show we didn’t get it right the first time

So what’s the bottom line..It’s just a pretty looking operating system.still does the same job as XP

I cant really see how it is not any more straight forward than any other windows operating system or how it is slower unless you are trying to run it on a really old clunker with a lack of ram. I have it running perfectly on a Celeron laptop and Celerons are definately not know as powerfull.

As to third party hardware recognition , as always it is up to the hardware manufacturers to produce drivers for operating systems. If they havent done it by now , their support is badly lacking for their product and isnt worth buying.

Vista is miles ahead compared to XP after the same release time. XP has had a third service pack released so its still having fixes. Windows ME came out quickly after Windows 98SE.....it doesnt mean there was anything wrong with Windows 98.

I had numerous problems with Vista when it came out , but I also had the same with XP. Since service pack 1 was installed , it has run like a dream.

Vista runs great for me too. However I see lots of people having problems with the OS. Personally I see two causes, security and hardware. Everyone in security knows that when security increases in general usability will decrease. The market "demanded" more security, so people should expect a slight decrease in usability. After a a day I was used to it.
Hardware is the other problem. Vista should have had higher minimum hardware recommendadtions from the start. In the beginning Microsoft was to optimistic in my opinion. When the Hardware is sufficient everything should run with the same speed as XP. emember XP is 6 years old. Just like the rest of the world technology evolves and it is reasanable to say that the OS released today should run on higher hardware specs as 6 years ago. Just try to run XP on a box that was released when Win95 was released. The other issue is drivers but as already mentioned most hardware vendors have developed Vista compatible drivers.
I'm pretty close to the source and I promise you the rumour this thread started with is a rumour and nothing more.

Have Vista Home Premium installed in the laptop, which work well enough since its a Pentium Dual Core 1.73 with 1GB RAM, 256MB Graphics and fast SATA HDD.

On the older (much older) desktop, there is no chance in hell that I could run Vista, the specs alone tell you that the desktop should be put into retirement, but hey it works great with XP Pro (Corp (PID 640) edition too, full legit complete with WGA BS from MS even though its not really a propper legit version ), no issues at all.

Specs for the desktop?

Pentium III 450MHz
512MB SD RAM
4MB on-board Graphics chip
IDE 7200rpm 80GB HDD

In other words, there is no way that Vista Home Premium would run on the desktop ...

That said, I am getting used to using Vista, two things that really make it rubbish compared to XP are

1: Windows security ... oh please what rubbish, I'm the only user and the admin too, so why cant I totally switch off that rubbish ..

2: getting access to the temp folder in User Apps Data Security blah blah blah ..

With XP, its simple to install and remove apps, hell even icons from the interface ...

With Vista, its Windows needs permission rubbish ...

As for the temp folder, again with XP simple, enable hidden folders, Document settings, local settings TEMP ... done, each day you can delete the rubbish that slows down your operating system, with Vista .... yeah you get the point.

That said, Vista is overall a better operating system due to being faster in day to day use ... that said I would like to install XP (well my copy of the Corp version) on the Laptop as with the specs its running would be a speed machine ...

Who knows maybe I will do that once I can fully locate all the drivers needed for XP to make the laptop run as it does right now with Vista ...

Just for laughs the other day i loaded my 3.8GHz P4 & 2Gb RAM with Win98Se.

What a hoot!

Damn it was fast, but no support for half the stuff on the motherboard.

Maybe I will move to some distribution of Linux when XP's time comes, I refuse to install any more of Microsofts bloatware.
(Mind you, theres a fair few Linux disties out there that qualify for bloatware too nowadays. What the hell has happened to Linux disties that take up less than 1Gb on the HDD FFS???)

in my opinion, both operating systems have their ups and downs.
i'm currently working on dual booting my acer aspire 5135, with xp.
i'm really getting sick of Vista's Eyecandy.
but i believe their physical to virtual ram is far superior then xp's version, better for gaming.

Totally agree with that.

I like XP and VISTA and there is no doubt that xp is very stable now but,
it seems all the people that complain about vista think xp came out this perfect,
trouble free operating system?? xp looked different and was a pain in the backside just like vista,
Vista is my choice of OS now

Yup, it's just a problem with the nokia video recording codecs i think, however the fact that it crashes explorer rather than a ( if no worky, don't generate thumbnail ) type fix is kind of annoying. But i dealt with it in XP by just not generating thumbnails, so I guess I can do that too.

Can't remember the BSOD error, as I hadn't turned autoreset off.

Not to sure if you guys know but Microsoft windows 7 gets released next year.

The next version of Microsoft Windows, the software that defines the computing experience for most people, will nag users less than its much-maligned predecessor, Vista. PC users will be able to test the new edition early next year.

The world's largest software maker also is making Word, Excel and other key elements of Office -- its flagship "productivity" programs -- able to run in a Web browser. The move is meant to help confront rivals such as Google Inc. that offer free word processing and spreadsheet programs online, threatening one of Microsoft Corp.'s most precious profit centers.

The forthcoming Windows 7 will let users choose to see fewer alerts and warnings from their computers.

Rampant notifications alerting people to security risks irked many Vista users.

Michael Silver, an analyst for Gartner Inc., said a smoother debut for Windows 7 was crucial for Microsoft.

"The real hurdle is to get Vista's reputation behind them," he said.

Windows 7 keeps some of the significant design changes that debuted in Vista, but tosses out others.

In an interview, Julie Larson-Green, a Windows vice president, offered one small example: In Vista, Microsoft took the "add printer" feature out of the Start menu, but is restoring it in Windows 7 after users complained.

Hope its bettet that Vista....

Good ole google

Not that Im happy about the whole idea.. I mean, I have only been using Vista for about 8 months and like the rest of you, I get the feeling this has been a ridiculous nightmare! This short lived Vista, it kinda makes you feel violated doesn't it?

Long live Windows XP

i have a XP desktop a vista laptop and a just purchased Macbook.

to fix all your OS systems just get a macbook easy way for a fast hasselfree OS.

I would love to get a desktop Mac but they are just to dear to justify so ill just live with XP on the desktop.
