There are 2 ways of getting SP1, let update do it, available first through Windows Update, and in April it will be pushed out through Automatic Update. These updates won't occur for PCs with known hardware incompatibilities.

or download the 430MB standalone version from microsoft and take you chances with it failing if you have incompatibilities. Download details: Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Five Language Standalone (KB936330)

Well I did the update to Sp1 and I must say its a noticeable speed improvement, so far all seems good and running smoothly.

Mine came down via windows Update today. Definately seems faster when copying files which was an improvement I was waiting for.

How does this go with dodgy copies of Vista Ultimate?

Well the repair worked for the acpi.sys but then i found out i had 2 more corrupt files. ataport.sys and atapi.sys. The repair said it could not fix anymore and wanted to send info to microsoft. Got out the vista install dvd and copied the files to windows\system32\drivers and it rebooted and installed SP1.
I would recommend you have your install disk or make sure you have a restore point set before installing SP1 as there seem to be a lot of people having the same problems with these files. If you google "ataport.sys sp1"
you should be able to find "Roger's Blog" thats where i got the info on how to fix my machine. Good Luck
