    Default a fu@ked netbook

    i got a netbook
win 7 starter, i installed Kubuntu cause i like it and it has an OS designed for netbooks.
when i installed kubuntu the boot menu had a few different options, the win 7 and kubuntu ones were obvious but there was also one on there called vista something, so i was wondering what the hell is vista anything doing on this netbook so i booted into it to see what it was.

it was the recovery program for this samsung netbook and started to do a system recovery but i didnt actually let it get past the first screen so therefore i assumed it didnt really do anyway.

after i shut it down again the netbook it went into an endless cycle of starting up, quickly showing the bios screen (f2 bios, f4 recovery) you know the kind of screen that quickly shows on every computer. then showing a blinking cursor and then restarting and going through the cycle again.
pressing f2 gets me into the bios screen where i can change boot order and all that kind of stuff but f4 does nothing.

i assumed i had stuffed the master boot record or something like that so i created a usb bootable recovery disc and tried the "startup repair" tool which didnt find any errors

i then used the "system image recovery" tool and let it do its thing, no change.

so after all that here i am still not knowing wtf happened or how to fix the friggin boot record.
    any clues anyone?

try reinstalling kubuntu again and have a look and see if the partition table is intact when it asks you where you want to install or before you open the installer run gparted...

if it is... install kubuntu over the top of the old kubuntu install. this will re-install grub and fix any mbr issues.

if that doesn't work... maybe a full reformat with win7 will fix it???

only way i can figure how to reinstall kubuntu is to let it make yet another partition for itself "alongside other operating systems"
i dunno how to get it to install to a partition of my choosing, it seems i have to format it from a drop down menu of 10 choices "ext3 journaling file system, ext2 file system, etc"
i would fu@k the whole lot of it off if i actually had any way of reinstalling win 7 starter because thats the licence i have paid for.

In kubuntu can you get to a prompt in the console?

When I had trouble with the boot record - not kubuntu though and only a version of Linux installed - the following worked.

    #grub enter
    grub>root (hd0,0) enter
    grub>setup (hd0)

The commands and the drive will need to be altered to suit your system.

If you cannot get into the console do you have a LiveCD that you can boot from and with the drive unmounted run the above commands?

"Essential in recovery of messed up dual boot systems"

by ozerob on July 4, 2010

Pros: Bare bones, but this utility has all the basic features to reset a MBR when dual boot goes haywire after failed OS installs. Way better than trying to rebuild or restore a boot record manually.

Cons: I had no problems with this application, but It does assume you know a bit about boot records, so I'd recommend a bit of online reading before just using it in "blind faith mode" ... the info with the program itself is just adequate.

Summary: I used it to recover both Linux, XP and Win7 MBRs , all OK ! This after several failed installs of dual boot XP Pro SP3 and Win 7 Pro, Linux and Vista (eecchhh) - relocated MBR was too far gone to be recognizable. MBRfix recreated a usable boot record in seconds as opposed to the hours I might have spent reformatting and restoring from backups. I recommend this to anyone running mutli boot systems.

i ended up reinstalling kubuntu "alongside another operating system" and it worked, i just have 2 installs of kubuntu now but sometime i will be using that gparted app to wipe the whole lot and start again, excluding the samsung recovery bullshit.
the silver lining is during my searching for a solution and looking for a win 7 starter iso i discovered a little app that lets you wipe a file from a win 7 iso that restricts it to one version.
in other words this app turns a 1 version iso of win 7 into an all version iso, like vista.
therefor i assume win 7 starter will be on there as well.

oh well i dont care as long as i can reinstall it at some point, i didnt get any kind of installation disc with it being a netbook.
the site i came across said that file was stopping the win 7 disc from being universal, havnt actually tested it.
