What type of modem is it and do you know what sort of connection it is? PPPoE, PPPoA etc

Its a provider supplied modem (2071-A) and as for this PPPoE, PPPoA- I wouldn`t have the slightest idea.

You should be able to just use dhcp to get an IP address from the modem and get online, unless the modem is in bridge mode, in which case you will need to setup a pppoe connection on the pc using your broadband connection username and password. I have not used the linux distro your running so cant give you more specific instructions. If you need to use pppoe, there should be some sort of network wizard for setting up a pppoe connection in kde or gnome or whatever it is your running.
