Would windows 3.1 run on a modern PC?
What about drivers and such?
I am looking for a copy of a Windows 3.1 ISO. I am working on a radio (communications) programing virtual machine and need the older platform. I have looked online and instead of downloading a virus or something I would rather like to locate the software on a reputable forum, IE Austech ... Thank you. Jon

Damnit, I KNEW I shouldn't have tossed my WfWG 3.11 CD away!.........
I only binned it last week in a massive cleanout of old software I had.

Thank you, I am currently using version 4.1.18. And yes, Win 3.1 will actually work on our new workstations. You have to dial the processor back and set limits as to the RAM / HD usage etc. I had a working VM a few years back but ended up trashing it. Now I wish I had kept it. - Jon![]()
You can get Dos 6.22 and Windows for Workgroups 3.11 here:

I made a live Win 3.1 CD once. It created a Ram disk and installed itself into it at boot time. Work like a charm because after it loaded the system would run entirely from memory, no hard disk necessary! I use to use it to access PC's without hard disks or corrupted disks in the days of Win 98 and a bit later, but that was necessary. Why are you restricted to Win 3.1? I still program in VB3, but I use Win 2000 for that now and I have recently updated some of my old code to the .net platform. Likewise I use qb64 which uses my tried and tested QB syntax. I can hack code in QB in seconds, whilst I'm not familiar with the newer platforms, nor do I really care to be. I only do it for my own purposes and like I stated in a recent post I can kickstart the virtualbox, do the code and have the results on my Win7 partition in less time than it would take me read the new flaming manual!
Other than that, Win 3.1 really shouldn't be running in virtual box on a modern pc. Unless you use an older virtual PC I don't think you can share the host environment and even if you could you probably can't with out getting into violation errors (DOS can't read more than 32MB partitions) etc. Then the drivers (e.g. mouse and video) may stuff things up, not to mention the known problem of win 3.1 trying to take over the CPU (which may be resolved if you start in standard mode: "win /s"). Don't get me wrong, it will work, but I wouldn't consider it a solution. I would use a dedicated legacy PC. You find these dumped on footpaths during council clean-ups or just join your local freecycle.org group and just ask for one. Then if you really need to access your main PC you could feasibly network the two. I used to use an ethernet crossover cable or laplink for that. In any case you may need these drivers:
While you're at it don't forget to install the Microsoft BOB GUI, real cool!
Cheers
