I was just thinking the other day that I would like to have a play on a Linux OS, However, I don't know which distribution to get and/or where to get it.
Anyone have some suggestions?

I like the Ubuntu wubi.exe that installs from inside XP, making a dual boot. Have a read Run it inside Windows XP the New Ubuntu Hoary Heron Due Very Soon...

For anybody who wants the experience I would recommend a so called "Live" distribution

Most distro sources have one . So you put it on a CD and boot from the CD.
One I use on my USB drives is Puppy . It goes on about 100Meg and on a 1 Gig disk you have 900Meg left to store stuff. Boots from the usb drive itself and gives you full access to whatever is on the machine you are working on too.

Ubuntu for sure for a first timer. Great supports forum that is noob friendly, Easy update manager. Constantly updated with newest kernel. Love CD's and heaps of offspings like xbuntu for low low spec systems, mythbuntu for MythTV and heaps more.

Once you get the bug you will end up having a few different distro's.

I'd also recommend any distro you can get a live CD working enough to use, and then installing if the features seem right. As an example the laptop I'm using for this came with XP which ran bad. Ubuntu works with the sound and graphics, and nearly all of the other hardware. It's now running the same install but I've switched to KDE for the desktop, and installed MYTH TV as well. I have got myth configured yet but everything else works fine so far. If it wasn't for a few audio issues I would be using PC Linux 2007 instead but would rather not spend all of my spare time hacking a laptop that I just want to work.

Red Hat 3 or 4 comes to mind, they ran OK on my old 486; your drama will be finding a mirror that still holds the disc images.

Puppy Linux operates as root and gets away from the root/user issues in other distros

Its limited though but good for learning as you get full sccess to anybodys computer that boots from usb.

I tried Puppy Linux and couldn't get it to run off a USB stick. It also needs at least 48MB RAM but 32MB was requested.

Damn Small Linux will run on a 486 with 16MB RAM.
