Default XP login problem

Hi all ... any help appreciated.

I have a weird XP problem. My computer experienced a power failure and now XP doesn't want to login. When I type the password it says loading personal settings ... flicks to the desktop ... then flicks into shutdown mode ... closing network connections and saving settings.

I have tried starting in safe mode and the same thing happens. I have also tried using the administrators account and the same thing happens.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks for all the ideas.

Solution found in the form of ERD Commander.

It allowed me to edit the registry which turned out to be the problem.

This is the key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Userinit string value should be:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,

Mine was blank ... therefore the loop that was created.

Thanks again to those who posted suggestions.
