Default HP Pavilion t580a Memory

Hello People, I'm wanting to install more RAM into my computer, it currently has "512mb 400MHz DDR SDRAM" so the sticker on the front of the machine says and is becoming quite slow. Apparently I can install 2Gb, my question is has anyone got this machine and done what I would like to do.

Also, can I go to my local computer guy and install whatever generic RAM he has providing it say's "400MHz DDR SDRAM".

Or do I not know anything about what I'm talking about.
