Question PC Shut down

Hi guys,

I am building a new PC and for some reason it keeps on shutting itself off randomly (doesnt stay on for more than 10mins)

At first i thought its the motherboard so i took it back & they replaced it for me but its still happening with the 2nd motherboard. I have checked the CPU temp and its always around 27c.

Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated

Below are the specs:

1. gigabyte GA-X48-DQ6
2. Pioneer DVR-216BK
3. Sony burner DRU190S
3. corsair twin 2x2048 pc8500 (1066mhz) ddr2 ram 240pin dimms non ecc
4. ATI HD3850 pcie2.0 1gb XpertVision 2 of them.
5. case lian li pc-p80
6. seagate HD 160Gb X2 and 1TB seagate X1
5. power supply tr2rx 550w thermaltake power supply

Your PSU may be a little under powered.

Checkout the ATI certified PSU list, most are greater than 550W. AMD GAME ATI CrossFireX?

Admittedly they won't need that much power if you are only showing the desktop.

Disconnect all the HDs and burners except the boot hd and see how long it lasts, or disconnect all except a dvr and boot to a cd and see how long it lasts.

It's the HDD, had a PC doing the same last week, replace the HDD and all fixed.

Ghosted C: drive and loaded onto the new HDD and has not had a problem since

The HDD was brand new.

That's the problem, known issue is the cooling fan not working properly. Sapphire and ATI cards are affected. People are waiting on the GPU bios updates but have not held their breath, so they are using third party software similar to RivaTuner to create their own Fan Speed Profiles.

This problem can also be seen on the 3870's as well, the shut down is a safety feature so you cards don't catch fire.

Here is another forum members findings.

Quote:
I had heard a lot of good about the Radeon HD3850, so when it was time to buy a new computer I ordered an ATi Radeon HD3850 1GB. During the time I was waiting for my graphic card to arrive I visited these forums and saw that a lot of people had problems with these cards running very hot. So I crossed my fingers hoping that my card would not have these problems. But it is with great disappointment that I now see that my card also is affected by these problems.

I understand that these problems are related to a bad BIOS on the cards, that simply does not increase the fan speed when the cards run hot. With GPU-Z I have seen that my card is no exception. While playing games the GPU temperature reaches as high as 85 degrees Celsius but the fan speed remains at 0%.

If it's not your PSU getting choked, I'll strip naked and run through the forum!

550w for all that? No way. 750w High Efficency PSU is where you'd start with that setup. Preferably something with multiple 12v rails dedicated for your X-Fire setup.

thanks for all the replies

i replaced the PSU with a 330W just to test things and so far its running great. I hope im not gonna have any probs with the video cards i never liked ATI i dont know why i ended up buying 2 of them

I suspect a problem with the hard drive as well i set the 2 160Gbs as raid 1 and today one of them had a problem and i had to rebuild so i dont know if this indicates a problem with the hard drive also my 1Tb doesnt show up in windows anymore but i havent had the time to check in bios

rufus
lol...
you should know better than to be sucked in by PSU wattage ratings...

i reckon that system would run nicely on a 380Watt antec earthwatts system, i have a similar setup running on one of the mentioned psus

no issues...

I maintain that I was right about the power supply being the issue. The advice on a better power supply was merely a sidenote. It's too cold to get the kitty off right now.
