Default Samsung SATA DVD Rom Problems

Hi guys,
I was hoping someone might be able to steer me in the right direction wioth a problem I have with a newly installed SATA Samsung DVD Rom Drive.

A little background - I have the following specs:

* Abit MB with 6 sata ports
* Using 2 x SATA ports for HDD's
* Using 3 x IDE ports for a HDD and 2 x DVD Burners

The other day I installed a Via Sata Card. No problems there. I also installed a SATA Samsung DVD Rom Drive. I plugged this into one of the available SATA ports on the MB. For the first few days there was no problem. Yesterday I started getting a 'fail to boot HDD' error message when I'd turn the PC on. THe startup sequence would also list the Samsung SATA drive just before the fail message.

This is what I did:
* Turned power off at the wall socket and rebooted - all worked OK. But if I restarted and let it boot I'd get the same error message.
* Changed the boot sequence of the HDD's - THis did not work
* Unplugged the Samsung SATA DVD Rom drive from one of the SATA ports and rebooted - This worked OK

THe only way I could get it stable was to plug the Samsung SATA DVD Rom drive into one of the SATA ports on the Via PCI card.

Does anyone know why it would not boot correctly when plugged into a SATA port on the MB?

Any assistance greatly appreciated
Thanks

Yes it is.

All is working fine when the dvd rom is plugged into a sata port on the pci card, but not when the dvd rom is plugged into one of the 4 x free sata ports on the motherboard. Any clues guys?

I tried one of those add-in SATA cards once and it was a total failure. The machine had problems seeing it, or seeing the drives, sometimes it would work, sometimes not.
In the end I tossed it and fitted a new motherboard with onboard SATA.

I have also noticed that some machines have difficulties distinguishing between different IDE and SATA drives when you have both connected to a system.

Boot errors and configuration seem to be the main problems.
