Default whats too hot?

Not an overclocking qustion, but figured you guys would know best, what temp is too hot for a P4 3.2ghz? When playing games my mobo monitor tells me it is exceeding 75oC. how hot can it get before its gets damaged?

It's too hot if the PC crashes or locks up after starting to push some heavy use at it. My old P4 HT 3.2 chip used to crash at 65 degrees on the stock heatsink; or after fitting a bigger aftermarket unit never.
The current chip is a Pentium D that regularly report it's 75 degrees C at idle yet the heatsink (the same one at that) only reaches 45 deg at idle and I've seen it reach a heatsink temp of 75 degrees and still running hard. If it crashes it's time to turn the fan back on because at the moment I'm actually running it silent.

how accurate are those monitoring applications anyway? I had a motherboard once that had a bios update that dropped the displayed levels by 10 degrees or so...

When you use a diode inside the chip then they aren't exactly calibrated. It's a case of at least you can see if the chip's running hotter than normal.

Anything above -30 degrees is TOO hot.

Biohazard's CryoniCool Technology provides the ultimate level of system cooling. With 180Watts of CPU cooling power alone, the phase-change cooling system keeps CPU operating temperatures at -20°C to -30°C! This powerful cooling allows levels of overclocking standard air and even liquid cooling cannot reach.
