assuming it has xp on it , boot up from install disk and choose recovery console . repair mbr only and hopefully it should work
Have had the same thing a few times and that has worked for me
Hi all,
I had an issue with one of my PC which i still cant resolve. I went to boot it up yesterday and it comes up with the black scrreen asking if i want to boot up in "Safe Mode", "Safe mode with Networking", Normal, last known good configuration etc.
whichever one i choose, it continues to bootup screen where the windows emblem appears, then it reboots showing that black screen again.
Any mode i select does the same thing.
Has anybody fixed this before? If not, looks like a reformat aaaaaaaaaggggggggggrrrrrrrrrrrrr

thanks for that ozchips. Yes, it is XP
i'll give it a go and see how it goes. I've never used the recovery console from the xp disk. Is it easy to use?
any basic tips i should follow?
How does a MBR become damaged/corrupted?
ive got a pc here that had same problem turns out it had a corrupted partition, repaired that and its going well now try fixmbr from recovery console first NS
The early bird may get the worm, but its the second mouse that gets the cheese!
try scan for disk errors this can cause reboots as well when it hit bad cluster or damaged window files

Actually there is few bootable software that you can play with, and it may or may not fix your problem, like Hiren CD, UBCD, but if you can afford to formatt and re install that would be the way the go in my opinion, you might waste more trying to fix it and scanning the harddrive for errors than a reformatt, and if you do go ahead with the formatting, when you get to the format C, don't do a quick format do the normal format as it will scan for errors and try to fix them on your HDD. and if you have anything you need to back up, put your drive on a working pc and back it up there so you don't loose any files.
Good luck mate.
no just start it up and do it really , off memory it may pay too type 'help' to get the correct command
o.k. all sorted out. I tried the recovery console with no luck. I tried the fixmbr command, that didn't fix it. I tried fixboot command, that didn't fix it, i then tried the bootctg command with no fix either. In the end, I did a repair from the windows XP disk and it worked a treat.
Thank you all for your help.

I had the same problem recently and it turned out to be a faulty RAM chip
Had encountered this situation in the past and used UBCD to fix it. Just google Ultimate Boot CD if you need one. It's free.
Alternatively, as mentioned by Aboulaly, just format and re-install because you might end up saving more time than troubleshooting.
