Just came across this, new 100mbps super fast broadband with a PVR unit connected.
Future of pay tv?
In what signifies a hotting up in the home entertainment market, Telstra has announced the release of a new digital set-top box it has christened the 'T-Box'.
Holly Kramer, Telstra's director of product management, said the unit gives users the ability to view and record free-to-air TV, pause and rewind live TV, and gain integrated access to exclusive BigPond internet TV channels and a movie download store.
The T-Box's offerings would be "complementary" to the channels available on Foxtel, which the telco half owns, Ms Kramer said.
The device is an internet-enabled personal video recorder, or PVR, including a 200GB hard drive and electronic program guide. It is currently being trialled by "selected and invited" BigPond customers in Melbourne, and is expected to be available across Australia next year.
The T-Box will compete with the more established TiVo and Foxtel IQ products, both of which also offer a movie download service. Sony is also moving in to the space with the recently announced PlayTV accessory for PlayStation 3 consoles, which allows you to watch and record high definition TV.
Telstra, which is considered to be among the more expensive of Australia's telecommunications providers, has not released pricing for the T-Box. As a guide, the Sony PlayTV accessory, which goes on sale later this month, will retail for $169.95 (but requires a PS3 console). A TiVo PVR is currently available for around $600.
Super-fast broadband
Telstra also announced that one million Melbourne homes will soon have access to super-fast broadband after the completion of upgrades to Telstra's cable broadband network.
The boost in download speeds to 100mbps will be available to home internet users from December 1. No pricing has been announced.
Telstra said the cable upgrade would allow all members of a family to surf the web and play games online while downloading music and movies at the same time.
“This means that Melbourne now has the fastest (hybrid fibre coaxial) cable network…in the country,” said Ms Kramer.
The company denied the introduction was an insurance policy against being excluded from the National Broadband Network if discussions with the Government broke down.

Telstra will absolutely screw you on price and download....they will have a 200MB plan which you will blow in 30secs..!! haha..then charge you incredible excess mb...
even the Telstra rep on the news report said it ain't gonna come cheap...
I'm quite happy with NCable in Geelong.....F Testra...
I think Foxtel are making plans in a similar way, with their Ethernet RJ45 on the back of the IQ2

I haven't seen other threads on this, so thought I'd paste this from the Telstra site...price and plans.
I wonder what the minimum speed requirement is for the streaming etc...can't seem to find that. Reason I wonder, is that being regional, we only have adsl 1, and my max is 1500/256.
At the moment I pay tpg
49.95 adsl1
20.95 telstra home line
70.90 total now
for another 29.00 would get the rest they offer, but so far the value doesn't seem to be there in the channels available? I realise on top of that there is the one off $35 upfront plus $11/mth for 24months on your Telstra Bill for paying off the box, or you can buy it outright for $299 and lose that monthly fee. Two year minimum contract seems to be a killer though?
Has anyone gone to this yet, and willing to let us know all about their experience?

A friend has $149 package (must be $159). He want stop telling me how good it is. His wife makes lots of calls to mobiles, the internet tv download isn't included in the 200gb cap, record programs, buy movies, he goes on and on.
He got really excited when I told him that fox were doing a deal with Telstra to add some programs to their internet tv.
I have also read where fox was also dealing with Microsoft and will announce packages for Xbox live.

The big sports like AFL won't be making it to either the xbox360 or the T-box, from what I understand.
Lots of complains about the t-box, but that's par for the course in buying version 1.00 of something.

Ditto
There is a fine line between "Hobby" and "Madness"
I am interested but haven't jumped yet
It gives you all the AFL stuff you see on the bigpond site
but still no pay per view games, just replays and video highlights and radio, but you see them on you r TV not your pooter
Its cheap for a PVR too
Probably will get one after a while see how it goes and if they throw in more sweeteners.
I take it this is from an aerial not streamed? No good to us, only abc, sbs and nbn are digital locallyRecord, pause & rewind live free-to-air TV
