    Default Bodgey installations!!

I did a service call today for a family who have just moved into a townhouse they have just bought.
There is an existing DSC system installed but they didn't know how to use it even though they had been supplied with a code.
When I arrived this is what I found to be installed.

2 story townhouse with 1 keypad at the top of the stairs in the landing.
1x PIR also in the upstairs landing in the centre of the house.
    No external or internal sirens
    No phone connection
    Chubb sticker on front window
The code they were supplied with turned out to be the master code and worked but whats the point??
I showed them how to arm/disarm
System armed and alarmed but with no siren/strobe/screamer and no dialler connection the only indication of an alarm condition was the zone light on the keypad.

Gonna install a couple of new detectors and sirens for them but I have to wonder what the original installer was thinking??

I've been around for a while but things like this still astound me.
Anyone else have some weird installs they have come across???

Thats pretty poor. Its not an alarm, its just a door chime for when somone goes upstairs lol

Ive come accross my fair share of dodgy installs, but that prob tops it.

Ive come accross alot of keypads mounted on panels and the panel not having a key or even screws! im talking commercial also.

usualy (exp if its a new tennant) i explain and demostrate how poor it is

I just purchaced a house with an nx4 installed by a company whose name starts with A and ends with T. One reed on front door, one PIR in front lounge, one PIR in games room, one smoke detetor. no coverage in bedrooms etc. All zones on entry/exit as keypad is in kitchen. Panel is mounted in laundry wiith no power point installed, plugpack hangs all the way down the wall to power point intened for washing machine. No external siren/strobe installed, only an internal screamer. Was monitored.

    sounds typical.

Its the sad thing in our industry, the client got there system so there happy, A*T got there money, there happy, the subby that did the instsall got his few cents so hes ok.

So so many cowboys and money grabbing big businesses out there, and clients have no idea.

    Cool

This subject is related to one of tecom master's other recent threads. In that thread it was apparent that there are many people who don't give a rats about the finished job - just get the money & run. If it was done by a subby then the prevailing attitude is that as long as he has done what he was instructed to do then he can wash his hands of it & walk away with a feeling of job well done. Not my opinion but who am I to sail against the wind !

I've performed hundreds of installations and not once been approached by ACRS for an audit, if they audited more often maybe we wouldn't see so many dodgy installs.

heh, not much to take pics of since it's only half an alarm system in my book. Haven't opened the box yet though so might take some pics when i get around to ripping it out and putting a real panel in (ie. one with more than 4 zones)

It,s not always a tech who does bodgey work.
many hyears ago when I was working as a sparky I was asked to look at a lighting problem for a friend of a friend.
I rocked up to the guys house and he showed me a light fitting that he had installed himself and explained that when ever he turned it on the fuse blew.
The fuse in question was a power fuse and not a light circuit.
And now the punch line...the guy had made a lead out of fig8 with a three pin plug which was plugged into the power point in his lounge room. He had "secured" the cable up the wall and across the ceiling to his light fitting by nailing it to the wall with clouts in the middle of the fig8.
After I ripped it out, I inspected it and found that he,d pierced the active only in about 6 places and shorted the active and neutral in at least 3 (thankfully). This idiot had a couple of small kids so I shudder to think what could,ve happened if he hadn,t completely f****ed it instead of just piercing the active?????

    Now that is a worrie.

ive drilled through the odd power cables, thankfully most of the time ive drilled right in the middle, shorting the active and neutral to the earth.
Hard to tell with a cordless drill what youve done.

Reminds me of - NO JOKE - a panel i was servicing, the panel was a bit loose on the wall, noticed one of the screws was backed right out, so decided to do it up, as i did it up the lights went off! sure enough triped the lighting CB, took the screw out and advised the client. She remembered somthing about the lights playing up when the guy was installing it. :O so yeah, she had to get a sparky to fix.

    Cool

I've pulled out an Arlec w/less "security" system that would quite often cause the Arlec w/less doorbell to chime as you walked around the house.
