Question Wireless GE NX-10: How unsafe is that?

    Hello,

I just moved in an appartment we rent with my girlfriend. There have been many cases of burglary in the neighborhood over the past weeks, and I'd like to install a decent alarm system to discourage thieves of stealing my things.

I've been given an offer for a GE NX-10, with the GSM module, and all detectors and keyboards in wireless.

I read in the specs that wireless is on what they call "868Mhz Gen 2".

    - How likely would it be that a thief could jam the communications between the main board and the detectors/sirens?
    - Does the main board know when communications get tampered with, and does it react?
    - Are communications encrypted, or would it be possible to deactivate my alarm, by for example recording what my keyboard sends when I'm deactivating it and playing it again at a later time to break in? (replay attacks)

I'd really want to go with wired connections, but I'm afraid my landlord is very touchy to these kinds of things, and I don't want to "offer" him an alarm system when I'll leave, in approximately 3 years from now.

    Many thanks!

The GE NX / Reliance family of products are safe for domestic security. Unfortunately the wireless receiver (like a few others) has been susceptible to playback attacks. An educated thief could 'sniff' local wireless traffic (Eg. monitor wireless traffic when you disarm), record the data and play it back later to disarm the system later at will. The panel will identify a wireless tamper as any data that is similar but not the same as expected (Eg. another transmitting device for your neighbours alarm system).

My suggestion is to go for Paradox. They have a completely wireless solution that utilises a secure frequency shifting encryption technique. It’s cheaper too!

BTW: If someone wants to break in to your house to steal your Betamax, they are not going to go to the ends of the earth to hack your wireless security when a quick smash and grab will do the trick.

Thanks so much, exactly the kind of info I wanted!

I'll try to find an installer that does Paradox systems to ask for a quote.

My installer (G4s) is setting me back 1600+ euros (~2000 USD) for an NX10 with GSM, wireless with 3 MW/PIR wireless motion sensors. I find it a bit pricey, but any good system that will resist advanced thieves might deserve my savings.

I'm actually quite paranoid since my car just got broken into in front of my place, it seems they managed to open it by bruteforcing or replaying my car key transponder... so I don't want that to happen with my personal belongings.

And indeed, they can still smash down the door, let it ring and run away with my underwear or whatever they might want, but at least they'd be in a hurry, and probably less effective.
