    Default Tecom LAN Cable

Does anyone know where I can get some Tecom LAN cable from in WA.

The manual refers to it as Belden 8732.

I don't have an account with DAS, so that may not be an option, unless they allow over the counter sales.

Is there an alternative cable, say one without the earth and I can run the earth wire separately.

    Many Thanks

If you've got a security licence, DAS will sell to you over the counter. If you have no joy, drop me a PM with some details and I'll sort some for you.

What you are looking for is actually Belden 8723 or an equivalent cable suitable for RS485 communications. The main characteristics of this cable is that it is two pair individually twisted and shielded. DAS is not the sole distributer of this cable and many manufacturers such as Olex, General Cable, Madison and others all have their own variant of this cable. Make sure that if the cable you’re getting is not ‘Belden 8723’ that it is specified as being an equivalent.

Belden 8723 does not have an earth wire but it does have a shield (or drain) wire. Do not get these confused as this will cause more headaches than you realise.

Or you could try some of the electrical wholesalers like EIW or L & H etc or try Altronics.

As has been mentioned, any cable equivalent to Belden 8723 can be used for the Tecom LAN and yes you can run a separate earthwire with it (min 2.5mm square).
I strongly recommend that you check out the LAN system earthing requirements for the system (included with just about every Tecom product) as correctly installing the earth (and LAN) cabling is crucial to the correct operation of the system.
Have come across many installations that were causing problems due to this not being adhered to.
It is so easy to get it right the first time and frustratingly irritating to track down an earth fault afterwards.

Its funny that some people can google and find this forum but can't google and find some of the most basic answers they want.

Austech is optimised well for google searches. Imaz's bosch posts, puts Austech on the front page of google searches lol.

Hmm, I have been a member since Jan 09, I have googled and not found any suppliers in WA (besides DAS) with the terms Belden 8723.

Thanks to this thread, I have found suitable cable that is Belden 8723 compatible, and now have the RAS working perfectly and correctly earthed as per the documentation.

It is ashame that the Imaz situation has made some members paint us novices with the same brush.

    If it's a short run, try cat5.

[Just watch how much I get flamed for that suggestion!!]

In emergencys I have run in normal 6 core security cable with no problems, was at the time 100 miles from anywhere and had to finish the job TODAY!

w8srb - your link will be invisible to anyone not logged in. Not sure the point of that really, but for the benefit of any passers by intrigued by the preceding comment, it was a link to Amazon.

Mate, the mere fact you can spell puts you in a league apart.

I have always drawn a distinction between novice DIYers keen to learn and acting in good faith, such as yourself, and other utter timewasters, who can't be bothered even reading the manual before posting inane comments to an expert's forum.
